<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Lets see if this works. In a rush I uploaded some quick pics to try and come back and edits posts while away from my desktop. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Not sure if you have heard but I have a TON of fabric in the closet. I fear it is way more than I will ever sew up. I am TRYING to not purchase a lot of fabric and stitch up what is in there. Sadly, shorts don't use up very much per pair, especially 60" wide fabric. Anyhoo, here goes a few projects to come.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YmNqPBpdl7U/WRU2oVcRocI/AAAAAAAAIwU/BjD7AzQvz_8IWsdxPTB3DMa8ltAQwT_vACEw/s1600/EMshorts.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YmNqPBpdl7U/WRU2oVcRocI/AAAAAAAAIwU/BjD7AzQvz_8IWsdxPTB3DMa8ltAQwT_vACEw/s640/EMshorts.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Scalloped shorts are all the rage. Plus too cute for words. I bought this fabric a couple of years ago, I don't remember where. No surprise there. I love the red with aqua combo though. The bow on the front is simply a tube of fabric tied in a bow and tacked on. I'll be interested to see how it launders. The shorts are 100% cotton and the bow is poly/cotton.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The scallops were pretty easy to achieve. There are lots of tutorials online. I used this one: <a href="https://blog.colettehq.com/tutorials/tutorial-scalloped-hem">https://blog.colettehq.com/tutorials/tutorial-scalloped-hem</a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ieVyVBm4AOA/WRU2oaysW2I/AAAAAAAAIwY/pbFEvJxg8YkfawM8KJkjdYBmcrDn2x8eQCEw/s1600/EMshortsback.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ieVyVBm4AOA/WRU2oaysW2I/AAAAAAAAIwY/pbFEvJxg8YkfawM8KJkjdYBmcrDn2x8eQCEw/s640/EMshortsback.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I even put a pocket on the back. The pattern for the shorts are Children's Corner <a href="https://www.childrenscornerstore.com/products/ccparkerspants">Parker's Pants</a>. I may have to replace my pattern I have used it so much. Its looking pretty ragged. For my littles it fits great in the crotch length and they aren't too full in the leg. I am not a fan of the crotch down to their knees look. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The T Shirt is from <a href="http://www.arbblanks.com/girls-puff-short-sleeve-t-shirt">ARB Blanks</a> embroidered with a <a href="https://www.appliquecorner.com/motif-dress-form-embroidery-design-8003.html">floral design</a> from Applique Corner.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nwif7FFkO18/WRnWmvw2v6I/AAAAAAAAIxQ/LuRqQRoVbA0avzyxLjI9TmqsSoMZk_kOgCLcB/s1600/em2017.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nwif7FFkO18/WRnWmvw2v6I/AAAAAAAAIxQ/LuRqQRoVbA0avzyxLjI9TmqsSoMZk_kOgCLcB/s640/em2017.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Princess is growing up too fast!! She is almost seven and looking every day of it. She is pretty easy to sew for because she rarely says she doesnt like something. Except oatmeal. 😂 Will not eat it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have always been able to sew the size that matches her age. These shorts are a size 7. Since I have that ton of fabric I want to make some more of these for summer. She gets a lot of wear from warm weather clothes. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I hope you are sewing something fun, faithful reader. I have a lotmore to show you in the days to come. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wkAgU-HN_fg/WP-LijoRqVI/AAAAAAAAIvk/kteC0vEoQ4Y9ApHNJ9MldLQMxBImHbWJQCLcB/s1600/puppies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wkAgU-HN_fg/WP-LijoRqVI/AAAAAAAAIvk/kteC0vEoQ4Y9ApHNJ9MldLQMxBImHbWJQCLcB/s640/puppies.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I just needed to do something quick and cute. These were the results. Excuse the not so good pictures.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PaimhxAfMNk/WP-Lf2sC4xI/AAAAAAAAIvg/PonsOvSkZrAJLqkC-WLipbZspW5rj1c6gCLcB/s1600/leightonpuppy2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PaimhxAfMNk/WP-Lf2sC4xI/AAAAAAAAIvg/PonsOvSkZrAJLqkC-WLipbZspW5rj1c6gCLcB/s640/leightonpuppy2.jpg" width="512" /></a></div>
<br />
I still have a few Sew Beautiful knit rompers left in the stash. Momma loves rompers/bubbles/knit. Easy care, easy dressing and cute. To that end I dug up two that would fit the two littlest girls right now.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dpFUz4dt0Qg/WP-LcFYCUVI/AAAAAAAAIvY/TFL-AGFY92sQroHUWnwOWgjlnWmA9sJDwCLcB/s1600/lottiepuppy2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dpFUz4dt0Qg/WP-LcFYCUVI/AAAAAAAAIvY/TFL-AGFY92sQroHUWnwOWgjlnWmA9sJDwCLcB/s640/lottiepuppy2.jpg" width="512" /></a></div>
<br />
Unfortunately I didn't have two the same color in appropriate sizes. To tie them together in the "dressing sisters alike" my plan was to match the embroidery.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pSGCoDCKP5E/WP-LcIWe4NI/AAAAAAAAIvU/hjw9aKlHoJwyqq3cSYTT--HOz92UpuGWQCLcB/s1600/lottiepuppy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pSGCoDCKP5E/WP-LcIWe4NI/AAAAAAAAIvU/hjw9aKlHoJwyqq3cSYTT--HOz92UpuGWQCLcB/s640/lottiepuppy.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CdPEu3i__HI/WP-Lf6LaMvI/AAAAAAAAIvc/skVZQlgkcT8vqOtxTvI29ojXTuBOUiCGQCLcB/s1600/leightonpuppy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CdPEu3i__HI/WP-Lf6LaMvI/AAAAAAAAIvc/skVZQlgkcT8vqOtxTvI29ojXTuBOUiCGQCLcB/s640/leightonpuppy.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I used a machine embroidery from <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/MommysApronStrings?ref=l2-shopheader-name">Mommy's Apron Strings on Etsy.</a> Isn't he cute? The font used is from <a href="http://www.jolsonsdesigns.com/">Jolson's.</a> I think they turned out cute and are headed to the post office today.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QMhYZAOo0Mc/WP-Lk8I-44I/AAAAAAAAIvo/V7UqCK_YW2ApYY8IOzcs6CVCyN2orM_mQCLcB/s1600/cars.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QMhYZAOo0Mc/WP-Lk8I-44I/AAAAAAAAIvo/V7UqCK_YW2ApYY8IOzcs6CVCyN2orM_mQCLcB/s640/cars.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
Mimi couldn't forget brother. He is almost four, so my time for him is running out. Like his cousin counterpart, I'm limited to t-shirts and shorts. That is ok. I bought this fabric from <a href="https://www.childrenscornerstore.com/">Children's Corner</a> a couple of years ago. Aged long enough. The t-shirt is the last one in his size in the closet. Oops, might need to order more. Momma is not usually a fan of white t-shirts but I am hoping he is leaving behind the era of wearing his entire meal on his shirt.<br />
<br />
I know there are many who are gasping. The embroidery design is a "faux smocking" machine embroidery from <a href="https://www.appliquecorner.com/faux-smocked-truck-embroidery-design.html">Appliqué Corner</a>. I have been known to make loud noises of how I would "never" stitch one of those. Desperate times calls for desperate measures. Make your words sweet for when you have to eat them. I tried to flip the design so it matched the shorts. Brain freeze. I know how and did it, then I flipped it again because I thought the headlights were taillights. DUH!<br />
<br />
Shorts are <a href="https://www.childrenscornerstore.com/products/ccparkerspants">Parkers Pants</a> of course. I lined them with broadcloth. It makes them more wrinkle proof plus they have more body.<br />
<br />
I hope there is something quick and cute in your day faithful reader. Now off to make something for the other address. :)<br />

</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hnvN7Lz9dQ8/WPag4eT_tqI/AAAAAAAAIu4/FzZSkpZ8gQMj5l89IMnu1-uNw6zslt2iQCLcB/s1600/littlessew.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hnvN7Lz9dQ8/WPag4eT_tqI/AAAAAAAAIu4/FzZSkpZ8gQMj5l89IMnu1-uNw6zslt2iQCLcB/s640/littlessew.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
Don't those little dimpled hands just make your heart sing? Three of the littles were here at the end of February. One day it was just the older two and Mimi at home. So what to do but sew? In digging through my stash, I only had two novelty fabrics large enough to offer to the project, pillowcases.<br />
<br />
Nugget was first. but there was no one here to take his picture while he sewed. He was single minded, only wanted the end result. Had no interest in the process at all. "Are we finished yet" was his constant mantra. LG on the other hand was fascinated by the entire thing. And picked up what I expected of her quickly.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NFv56StmT6g/WPag4FWoYCI/AAAAAAAAIu0/dWVsredETCoaC7ytwHBza16RyhZyw6yjgCLcB/s1600/littlessew2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NFv56StmT6g/WPag4FWoYCI/AAAAAAAAIu0/dWVsredETCoaC7ytwHBza16RyhZyw6yjgCLcB/s640/littlessew2.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
She didn't want to keep her hands where I wanted them though, she wanted to investigate how the machine worked. Hence Mimi has a death grip on her hands. She was enthralled watching that needle making the stitches. Does this Mimi's heart good. Perhaps this summer, during Camp Mimi 2017 the girls can have squeeze in some more machine time.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5dyHfCUIbQY/WPag4oHmxCI/AAAAAAAAIvE/nxbsCnm2tX4HQvnDQ5IOLkDQsnCBi70egCEw/s1600/littlessew3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="530" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5dyHfCUIbQY/WPag4oHmxCI/AAAAAAAAIvE/nxbsCnm2tX4HQvnDQ5IOLkDQsnCBi70egCEw/s640/littlessew3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Here they are with their finished pillowcases. Too cute! They proudly have them displayed on their beds at home.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zf_4OJLFrXo/WPag39HwYQI/AAAAAAAAIvE/_S30I10Xx6IdsiMne0JRsKeKallaHLIIACEw/s1600/little.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zf_4OJLFrXo/WPag39HwYQI/AAAAAAAAIvE/_S30I10Xx6IdsiMne0JRsKeKallaHLIIACEw/s640/little.jpg" width="488" /></a></div>
<br />
Our littlest seamstress can not be deterred. When she wants something, she will have it. She uses these chairs to get into all kinds of predicaments both here and at home. Momma has threatened to make them into firewood. More than once. Here she is doing the dishes even though her Momma said otherwise.<br />
<br />
I hope you have a little one in your life with which to share your passion. Don't be afraid to try, they may surprise you.<br />
<br />

<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-33a6mQnfzYs/WO_n2bYrsfI/AAAAAAAAIuE/KAxn1ZUYHV8t9u0e_3qeGcyjTobHWLcJQCLcB/s1600/libertygarden2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-33a6mQnfzYs/WO_n2bYrsfI/AAAAAAAAIuE/KAxn1ZUYHV8t9u0e_3qeGcyjTobHWLcJQCLcB/s640/libertygarden2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Remember when I teased another photo of <a href="http://www.libertylondon.com/uk/department/fabric/">Liberty©</a> yumminess <a href="http://www.southernmatriarch.com/2017/02/what-is-on-machine.html">here</a>? Well I finished that project and can now share it with you.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yqz0nm3RwxY/WO_n2VRnw9I/AAAAAAAAIuc/Y-25hXRfO-gqNvWgofdEm8eTW-7KFidDQCEw/s1600/libertygarden3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yqz0nm3RwxY/WO_n2VRnw9I/AAAAAAAAIuc/Y-25hXRfO-gqNvWgofdEm8eTW-7KFidDQCEw/s640/libertygarden3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
My local <a href="http://www.smocking.org/">SAGA chapter</a> hosted <a href="http://luluandannies.blogspot.com/">Gail Doane</a> for a workshop a few weeks ago. As is our custom, our chapter provided table favors and door prizes to the attendees. Three of us worked on the table favors and these were my offering to the effort. They are even cuter in person.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iFNpvymb2Mg/WO_n2646-GI/AAAAAAAAIuc/0LHfBRPVoBMIvUaO5ppRu77eXsvshpsdwCEw/s1600/libertygarden7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iFNpvymb2Mg/WO_n2646-GI/AAAAAAAAIuc/0LHfBRPVoBMIvUaO5ppRu77eXsvshpsdwCEw/s640/libertygarden7.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
They are a simple pincushion that feature sweet spring bunnies surrounded by a garden of luscious <a href="http://www.libertylondon.com/uk/department/fabric/">Liberty Tana Lawn</a>© for the tops. I found a redwork bunny machine embroidery design for the centers. I altered the design a bit to make it smaller. No one needs a dinner plate sized pincushion. They are embroidered on a denimy-twill like fabric. (How is that for official sounding? Denimy, a new word.) After all the bunnies were embroidered I cut them apart and then added the strips of Liberty© around them randomly. I had no pattern, just winged it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FcaUi4wVB8E/WO_n2lvYO1I/AAAAAAAAIuc/Nyk6Q2gYQfQ6n0-SK2MII9fd-u_X96FKwCEw/s1600/libertygarden4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FcaUi4wVB8E/WO_n2lvYO1I/AAAAAAAAIuc/Nyk6Q2gYQfQ6n0-SK2MII9fd-u_X96FKwCEw/s640/libertygarden4.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
No two are alike. I deliberately did not plan which fabrics to add to each bunny. I liked the randomness of it. There are a couple of lawns that snuck in there that may not be a Liberty© prints but are wonderful none the less. How many prints can you name? Why DO we feel the need to know the name of the <a href="http://www.libertylondon.com/uk/department/fabric/">Liberty©</a> prints? Since the strips were only an inch wide, not a lot of <a href="http://www.libertylondon.com/uk/department/fabric/">Liberty©</a> was sacrificed for the project. The tops are sewn onto a layer of batting to do the "paper piecing" sewing to create the tops. Plus it gives the top a bit more oomph.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bNlKLm6Oh9k/WO_n2tzfNBI/AAAAAAAAIuc/R_FbC_Dyyb0oys2n8eIs1uNzishzuN3uQCEw/s1600/libertygarden5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bNlKLm6Oh9k/WO_n2tzfNBI/AAAAAAAAIuc/R_FbC_Dyyb0oys2n8eIs1uNzishzuN3uQCEw/s640/libertygarden5.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
Each pincushion is finished with a homespun type fabric I got from a <a href="http://www.janielouquilts.com/index.htm">quilt shop</a>. It actually was in my stash which is why I don't know exactly what it is. I know where and when I bought it, just don't remember its name. I did round the corners for ease of construction. There was a fleeting moment of insanity that I BRIEFLY considered piping these. After a stern talking to myself, I gave up on that idea. What was I thinking anyway?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-M1uzCSZSjts/WO_ouyAksLI/AAAAAAAAIuk/3z0wxG9lnrsWkzSCeyMXE1EgnmJN___FQCEw/s1600/libertygarden8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-M1uzCSZSjts/WO_ouyAksLI/AAAAAAAAIuk/3z0wxG9lnrsWkzSCeyMXE1EgnmJN___FQCEw/s640/libertygarden8.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
When they were complete, they were quite the sight to behold. Lurve!<br />

<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-spG3cK4mIu4/WOgVlmdDAiI/AAAAAAAAIq0/4Z-yztK2INwjX2XbGrsaOPfjtnBq8644gCEw/s1600/lottiecarol2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-spG3cK4mIu4/WOgVlmdDAiI/AAAAAAAAIq0/4Z-yztK2INwjX2XbGrsaOPfjtnBq8644gCEw/s640/lottiecarol2.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
I posted Baby's Easter dress a few days ago <a href="http://www.southernmatriarch.com/2017/04/a-bunny-for-baby.html">here</a>. I wanted to make life a tad easier for Momma when it came time to iron and get clothes ready for three little ones, three and under, when getting ready for church or to visit that Big Bunny for pictures. I decided to make the apron dress with a lining that could serve as a slip as well.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-n-AoeQw6Q3s/WOgbDS8hifI/AAAAAAAAIrg/WDM-uiUbCkgKV5sMd0TDi-b-wreY6rlkACEw/s1600/cc15_aprons_1024x1024.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-n-AoeQw6Q3s/WOgbDS8hifI/AAAAAAAAIrg/WDM-uiUbCkgKV5sMd0TDi-b-wreY6rlkACEw/s640/cc15_aprons_1024x1024.jpg" width="626" /></a></div>
<br />
As you can see from the pattern front <a href="https://www.childrenscornerstore.com/collections/patterns/products/ccaprons">Children's Corner Aprons</a> comes with four views. (One is not included in this pattern front photo.) I chose the center one which has a small square of smocking at the center front neckline.<br />
<br />
When I made the sample for the magazine submission that LG wore, I underlined it with silk organza. I wanted more of a slip this time. I chose Imperial batiste. There are some alterations that have to happen to the dress back pattern in order to create the "slip" lining. I will try and illustrate, forgive the horrid pics, it was nighttime.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Vu_RIXxWEIs/WOhRLjei9kI/AAAAAAAAIsI/V4Psv-LXviYRJ81yu-DEV1kGlPiRcFjsgCLcB/s1600/carolbackpattern.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Vu_RIXxWEIs/WOhRLjei9kI/AAAAAAAAIsI/V4Psv-LXviYRJ81yu-DEV1kGlPiRcFjsgCLcB/s640/carolbackpattern.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
This is the back pattern piece. Ignore the green tape for now. It is for all views.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6z8o6u3mVQI/WOhRLvBksHI/AAAAAAAAIsA/uYQ5L6ZKTEM9VElmVNtcxEmom7-vJepAACEw/s1600/carolpatternback2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6z8o6u3mVQI/WOhRLvBksHI/AAAAAAAAIsA/uYQ5L6ZKTEM9VElmVNtcxEmom7-vJepAACEw/s640/carolpatternback2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Notice on the pattern piece the markings:<br />
<ul>
<li>Place on Selvage</li>
<li>Foldline</li>
<li>Center Back</li>
<li>Lap</li>
<li>Facing</li>
</ul>
<div>
We are going to ignore the "Place on Selvage". Traditionally many Children's Corner patterns will have you place your pattern piece on the selvage to avoid having to finish that back edge during construction. Cut out your garment back according pattern piece with a 1/4" added seam allowance, NOT on the selvage. Now we are going to cut out an altered back from lining fabric.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LMPHF5dU6GU/WOhRL7u0kkI/AAAAAAAAIsQ/Gs2htyGyq7UfWPOtByf3cJ0hBbilGePEgCEw/s1600/carolpatternbackalter.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LMPHF5dU6GU/WOhRL7u0kkI/AAAAAAAAIsQ/Gs2htyGyq7UfWPOtByf3cJ0hBbilGePEgCEw/s640/carolpatternbackalter.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This is with the pattern piece folded back on that "Foldline" marking. Can you see how the folded under pattern section is shadowing through? The EDGE of the pattern piece is now at the green tape marking. That is where your facing would normally end and still will be after we add the lining/slip. That is where the green tape is placed. You don't have to use the highlighter tape, you can draw a line with a pencil. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-f49emFUt7tI/WOhRMMB9uLI/AAAAAAAAIsQ/NvLSBwI2oVgjKATrB8ffq1Bl16t7Ed-xACEw/s1600/carolpatternbackalter2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-f49emFUt7tI/WOhRMMB9uLI/AAAAAAAAIsQ/NvLSBwI2oVgjKATrB8ffq1Bl16t7Ed-xACEw/s640/carolpatternbackalter2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Fold pattern piece under again where the green tape/line was placed. YOU NEED TO ADD A SEAM ALLOWANCE HERE. I added 1/4" for a seam allowance. The line/tape edge is the seam line edge of your new pattern piece. This is the piece you will use to cut out your back lining/slip pieces. Cut out this pattern piece <b>making sure to add a 1/4" seam allowance </b>from your lining fabric.<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dz2FA7YeIEM/WOqqSkSBvnI/AAAAAAAAIsg/HQOc1P5Bqvsu6DsIhShpDh6UoLgdRopVQCLcB/s1600/carolbackalter4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dz2FA7YeIEM/WOqqSkSBvnI/AAAAAAAAIsg/HQOc1P5Bqvsu6DsIhShpDh6UoLgdRopVQCLcB/s640/carolbackalter4.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
You should have two backs that look like this. (Since I did not take photos of these steps during construction of the dress I have used a doll sized bodice back <b>for illustrations purposes only.</b>) Note that the bodice back from the aqua fabric is considerably wider than the lining piece.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OlC6NykmDe8/WOqqSklG88I/AAAAAAAAItI/z9E6ygqZ1r89zBlvfT2mBRPyie9c3vk6wCEw/s1600/carolbackalter5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OlC6NykmDe8/WOqqSklG88I/AAAAAAAAItI/z9E6ygqZ1r89zBlvfT2mBRPyie9c3vk6wCEw/s640/carolbackalter5.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Stitch the straight edge of the back to the straight edge of the lining, right sides together. Press seam towards lining. Fold back on the fold line indicated on the pattern. Voila! Your bodice/dress back has a facing of garment fabric with the lining attached. Since this application makes your button band only two layers, make sure to interface your button band for added stability for creating buttonholes.<br />
<br />
Continue construction of the dress. For the Carol, I used the dress front pattern piece for the non pleated dress front for my lining. Another reason my lining needs to hang free because the lining is not the same width as the smocked front. Stitch side seams of lining right sides together, and dress right sides to gather. Stitch shoulder seams of dress and lining. Attach collar sandwiching it between the the lining and dress front. Insert sleeves. Time to address the hem.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iUaYNasnvGs/WOqqS5VcqjI/AAAAAAAAItI/Oqbjq8qY3vkzxeghBBEFqY8KPKRP56LgACEw/s1600/carollininghem1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iUaYNasnvGs/WOqqS5VcqjI/AAAAAAAAItI/Oqbjq8qY3vkzxeghBBEFqY8KPKRP56LgACEw/s640/carollininghem1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Due to abject laziness I am going to illustrate how to finish your slip/lining at the hem so that your lining hangs free, using the doll sized bodice pieces I just used. <b>**</b>When constructing your dress, when you are stitching the lining to the facing, end stitching at the point that equals twice the hem depth plus 1/2". I had to reverse stitch a tad to illustrate. Trim your lining to same depth as the <b>FINISHED HEM LENGTH</b> of your dress.<b>** </b>Fold your slip lining under 1/4" twice, machine stitch your lining hem in place.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sTNrzU232AY/WOqqS1nNnpI/AAAAAAAAItI/Zu5vbpVX0vknVv_7sMt3BxZ_aSRzoNd0gCEw/s1600/carollininghem2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sTNrzU232AY/WOqqS1nNnpI/AAAAAAAAItI/Zu5vbpVX0vknVv_7sMt3BxZ_aSRzoNd0gCEw/s640/carollininghem2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
This shows both hem depths folded up. On a child sized garment, your lining will be 1/2" shorter than your garment hem. This photo is taken before I stitched the lining hem in place.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SfbTvSdW_co/WOqqTHYy-XI/AAAAAAAAItI/ZezxkWYpER4btTpyUyQo1-ZKHy__ufTxgCEw/s1600/carollininghem3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SfbTvSdW_co/WOqqTHYy-XI/AAAAAAAAItI/ZezxkWYpER4btTpyUyQo1-ZKHy__ufTxgCEw/s640/carollininghem3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
After your hems are both stitched in place, (no these aren't stitched, it's a tutorial! I'm just showing the steps) clip the seam allowance of the garment fabric at the top edge of your finished hem. It is indicated as a black line on the seam allowance.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vDbiJxerNaw/WOqqTAcbZgI/AAAAAAAAItI/0oV8FczvS7cteyvBiLLx3u4LZ-px1Xz8ACEw/s1600/carollininghem4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vDbiJxerNaw/WOqqTAcbZgI/AAAAAAAAItI/0oV8FczvS7cteyvBiLLx3u4LZ-px1Xz8ACEw/s640/carollininghem4.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Fold under the seam allowance on the hem portion below the clip and slip stitch in place. This will give you a clean finish below the slip/lining. You may also do the same to the seam allowance on the slip lining, I did not do that here.<br />
<br />
Since your seams are exposed between the layers of the lining and the outer dress you have to address the side seams. You can finish the seams in the manner you choose. I chose to pink the seams allowance.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0pzOfUj6QPk/WOqxvyWEEDI/AAAAAAAAItY/4zOefQ8l3Yk5z2mYX9iKV3iBnQ8ZJ78pQCLcB/s1600/lottiecarollining.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0pzOfUj6QPk/WOqxvyWEEDI/AAAAAAAAItY/4zOefQ8l3Yk5z2mYX9iKV3iBnQ8ZJ78pQCLcB/s640/lottiecarollining.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
This is the inside of the dress after it is complete.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />

<br />
Big sister, LG, is wearing her <a href="http://www.southernmatriarch.com/2017/02/a-road-trip-to-lolli-hop-lane.html">Lolli-Hop Lane</a> from the Spring 2017 of <a href="http://www.classicsewingmagazine.com/">Classic Sewing Magazine</a> for Easter. Since this photo was taken last summer when LG was just twenty months old, the hem needed to be let down and baby sister needed a matching dress.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

Again, I used <a href="https://www.childrenscornerstore.com/collections/patterns/products/ccaprons">Children's Corner Carol</a> which is included with their Aprons pattern. Lucky for me it comes in sizes 6mos - 4. Our sweet girl is a peanut, I fear the size 6 mos might still be a tad too roomy. We will see.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Tan54BAf8YA/WOgVlj01goI/AAAAAAAAIq0/xD_2vFWPhmsyD5fLJNdON832Lq7fjv5lwCEw/s1600/lollihoplanebaby.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Tan54BAf8YA/WOgVlj01goI/AAAAAAAAIq0/xD_2vFWPhmsyD5fLJNdON832Lq7fjv5lwCEw/s640/lollihoplanebaby.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Since baby is only four months she can't have a lollipop stick. :) For safety sake, I made the stick into an old fashioned <a href="https://www.spanglercandy.com/candy-store/saf-t-pops-assorted-200ct">Saf-t-pop</a> handle. Remember those? (Ironically enough, the dentist used to hand them out when I was a kid.) I also pleated/smocked fewer rows to have the smocked area more proportional for the smallest size. The handle is a 70-75 wrap bullion loop that I couched down in about 3 places along the bottom curve and made a straight stitch just under the bow tie over the ends of the loop.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I did not use the gingham covered buttons on the back. Sweet girl is still a lay-about baby and I didn't think the covered shank buttons would be very comfy. These cute pink and white buttons look great and match the color of the piping.<br />

Must be time for a little baseball. Instead of Opening "Day" its been Opening Night for primetime tv reasons I am sure. I even bypassed my usual Sunday night viewing of PBS. :)<br />

This guy is the man of the hour today all over the news. They do love their baseball here. Its always a good time to be in the Gateway City when these boys are back to what they do best.<br />

Back to slogging through this sewing room. You can't even see the floor in here today.<br />

<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6tL7_XGB1QY/WL7pX8v52jI/AAAAAAAAIn8/bIgpA9VGTFwg8Anta_TV_Y8lL5wxF1kAwCLcB/s1600/louisealter.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6tL7_XGB1QY/WL7pX8v52jI/AAAAAAAAIn8/bIgpA9VGTFwg8Anta_TV_Y8lL5wxF1kAwCLcB/s640/louisealter.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
As promised here is the follow on tutorial on changing a sleeveless bodice to receive a set in sleeve.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-un3eqgKov1k/WL7qZWylHNI/AAAAAAAAIo4/F-Wuw0odg2c_Z1ANhiZq_lV6nNkLsulqACLcB/s1600/Louisealter2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-un3eqgKov1k/WL7qZWylHNI/AAAAAAAAIo4/F-Wuw0odg2c_Z1ANhiZq_lV6nNkLsulqACLcB/s640/Louisealter2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<a href="https://www.childrenscornerstore.com/products/cclouiserevised">Children's Corner Louise</a> fits Princess quite well and is open to many adaptations. This one is a fairly easy alteration, <b>even if pattern drafting scares you</b>. I used the bodice of <a href="https://www.childrenscornerstore.com/products/ccvirginiarevised">Children's Corner Virginia</a> to alter my sleeveless bodice. I used <a href="https://www.childrenscornerstore.com/products/ccruthie">Children's Corner Ruthie</a> for the sleeve. For my mind, it seems counterintuitive to add to the bodice to add a sleeve but that is what you do. A sleeveless bodice is cut in on the armholes and can sometimes dip down at the neckline.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6QA_mP_xo9c/WL7qZ3FZhbI/AAAAAAAAIpU/p5Vy0nkWBws-R3fdy5qLEH0m3eCIUaLAQCEw/s1600/louisealter5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6QA_mP_xo9c/WL7qZ3FZhbI/AAAAAAAAIpU/p5Vy0nkWBws-R3fdy5qLEH0m3eCIUaLAQCEw/s640/louisealter5.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
You can see the extra width of the <a href="https://www.childrenscornerstore.com/products/ccvirginiarevised">CC Virginia</a> pattern piece underneath the <a href="https://www.childrenscornerstore.com/products/cclouiserevised">CC Louise</a> pattern piece. (To answer the obvious question, yes on the Lolli-Hop Lane dress I did use a <a href="https://www.childrenscornerstore.com/products/ccruthie">Children's Corner Ruthie</a> sleeve, the reason I did not use the bodice of <a href="https://www.childrenscornerstore.com/products/ccruthie">Ruthie</a> for the inset sleeve alteration is because the <a href="https://www.childrenscornerstore.com/products/ccruthie">Ruthie</a> has a high yoke and it would have meant an extra step of taping, tracing the skirt to the bodice to get a complete armhole. Remember all Children's Corner patterns are interchangeable in their parts. So a <a href="https://www.childrenscornerstore.com/products/ccruthie">Ruthie</a> sleeve would fit a <a href="https://www.childrenscornerstore.com/products/ccvirginiarevised">Virginia </a>armhole.) So onto the instructions of how to do this.<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Lay your sleeveless bodice pattern piece <b>over</b> your "sleeved" bodice piece. Matching center fronts. </li>
<li>Decide at this point if you want a to leave the neckline dropped, I chose to leave it.</li>
<li>Trace a new pattern piece </li>
</ul>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-N0YUuPwshIE/WL7qaK27laI/AAAAAAAAIps/zYZP6m0Qe44kLQlLHk2GhsSrHjydjsHGwCEw/s1600/louisealter6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-N0YUuPwshIE/WL7qaK27laI/AAAAAAAAIps/zYZP6m0Qe44kLQlLHk2GhsSrHjydjsHGwCEw/s640/louisealter6.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<br />
It is a tad difficult to see through the three layers, my stack has the <a href="https://www.childrenscornerstore.com/products/ccvirginiarevised">Virginia</a> bodice on the bottom, the <a href="https://www.childrenscornerstore.com/products/cclouiserevised">Louise </a>bodice in the middle of the stack, ending with the tracing paper on top of all. Transfers markings.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yCTF_-jFFo8/WL7qaN_-FdI/AAAAAAAAIps/gjvPN0uUSZQY56sKkjJYPimw9x1A8soAQCEw/s1600/louisealter7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yCTF_-jFFo8/WL7qaN_-FdI/AAAAAAAAIps/gjvPN0uUSZQY56sKkjJYPimw9x1A8soAQCEw/s640/louisealter7.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Note on your new pattern piece all pertinent information. <a href="https://www.childrenscornerstore.com/products/ccvirginiarevised">Virginia</a> armhole, <a href="https://www.childrenscornerstore.com/products/cclouiserevised">Louise</a> bodice with smocked insert, size and cutting directions.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/--lweE48Mtyw/WL7qaWVSPdI/AAAAAAAAIps/nICMg8IFQ24T8Pf0MrHxbqB6z6I5ntm7gCEw/s1600/louisealter8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/--lweE48Mtyw/WL7qaWVSPdI/AAAAAAAAIps/nICMg8IFQ24T8Pf0MrHxbqB6z6I5ntm7gCEw/s640/louisealter8.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Repeat the same process for the back bodices. <span style="font-size: large;">It really is that simple.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-y6DXWv_CW_s/WL7qaQpiCuI/AAAAAAAAIps/M1gOiEiPywMSEBUPCdKCJ_5SY5bv41NQgCEw/s1600/louisealter9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-y6DXWv_CW_s/WL7qaQpiCuI/AAAAAAAAIps/M1gOiEiPywMSEBUPCdKCJ_5SY5bv41NQgCEw/s640/louisealter9.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Voila! My sleeveless dress has been altered to include a sleeve. Proceed with your normal construction. I hope this helps those that had questions about how I altered the dress pattern for the article Lolli-Hop Lane in <a href="http://www.classicsewingmagazine.com/">Classic Sewing Spring 2017</a>. </div>

<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-33drhLqQ5wk/WKeu8W_RBMI/AAAAAAAAImY/M0h9RKswYrgxMjwNa2kS4NfuhWiMEc13wCLcB/s1600/lollihoplane5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-33drhLqQ5wk/WKeu8W_RBMI/AAAAAAAAImY/M0h9RKswYrgxMjwNa2kS4NfuhWiMEc13wCLcB/s640/lollihoplane5.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I have been asked to do a tutorial on how I altered the <a href="https://www.childrenscornerstore.com/collections/patterns/products/cclouiserevised">Children's Corner Louise</a> for both a smocked insert and sleeves. This post will be about the smocked insert. Another will follow in a day or so with the sleeve alteration.<br />
<br />
First off I am not a pattern drafter but I am a fair to midland instruction follower. For many years I have heard many wiser than I say how the pieces/parts of Children's Corner patterns are interchangeable. I have found this to be true. This is not always the case of every pattern line, but Children's Corner patterns were developed over the years using the same pattern blocks. This is what makes them interchangeable.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yrA5Lfo5ZYQ/WKeuvTJeztI/AAAAAAAAImc/xUK2LRazV0odkVPFfzTKRaDpqwKgTON_wCEw/s1600/Louisealter2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yrA5Lfo5ZYQ/WKeuvTJeztI/AAAAAAAAImc/xUK2LRazV0odkVPFfzTKRaDpqwKgTON_wCEw/s640/Louisealter2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I love the way Louise fits, it is appropriate for a little bit older girl while still allowing for some design changes. I knew I wanted it smocked but at six and half I felt like a basic yoke like CC Lee was a tad younger look than what I was going for. That bodice is a blank canvas for so many design changes. I chose to insert a smocked panel.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2EZZMjEdiW8/WKeuvs68R7I/AAAAAAAAImc/Wdl3RI7xjN8ycZR54nE4q_fL5gcx5ppxQCEw/s1600/louisealter3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2EZZMjEdiW8/WKeuvs68R7I/AAAAAAAAImc/Wdl3RI7xjN8ycZR54nE4q_fL5gcx5ppxQCEw/s640/louisealter3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-UYcb354U-20/WKeuvp-ZhmI/AAAAAAAAImc/bzrEADWyM9sEqAQDCFh6N82oGk7lyzERgCEw/s1600/louisealter4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-UYcb354U-20/WKeuvp-ZhmI/AAAAAAAAImc/bzrEADWyM9sEqAQDCFh6N82oGk7lyzERgCEw/s640/louisealter4.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
One thing to keep in mind is proportion. I am not a big fan of a smocked insert covering a child's entire chest. To me, it looks over done as well as heavy. Unlike a pleated skirt or full smocked bodice, the insert is more rigid by nature and has a tendency to stand up away from the child like a placard. A more narrow insert has less chance of doing that. That is just my opinion. I chose to make the insert about one-third of the length of the bodice. The finished insert is approximately 3" of the 9" of the bodice front. This measurement might change depending on the size you are making. Try to keep in mind the rule of thirds and this will work well for you.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-31F_54_W5Ck/WKe4jDLCq4I/AAAAAAAAIms/mtjKdADrchcMg8jwq76qK0R6spEkdsx9QCLcB/s1600/EMEaster2016.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-31F_54_W5Ck/WKe4jDLCq4I/AAAAAAAAIms/mtjKdADrchcMg8jwq76qK0R6spEkdsx9QCLcB/s640/EMEaster2016.jpg" width="404" /></a></div>
<br />
I made this <a href="https://www.childrenscornerstore.com/collections/patterns/products/cclee">Children's Corner Lee</a> for Princess last Easter. I smocked the plate as written and ended up with chocolate bunnies under her arms. I like picture smocking but not to have it end up under her armpits! She loved it and that is what matters. All that aside, I didn't want to smock bunnies for under her arms this year.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-y0vovIFrf5U/WKeuva_xK7I/AAAAAAAAImc/xIgWMD9TQPwdb_IPwmxlliGJ6G1TQiXBwCEw/s1600/louisealter10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-y0vovIFrf5U/WKeuva_xK7I/AAAAAAAAImc/xIgWMD9TQPwdb_IPwmxlliGJ6G1TQiXBwCEw/s640/louisealter10.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So I chose to add "wings" to either side of the insert. A wing is a block of fabric the same depth as the pleated piece cut on the straight of grain. I joined these blocks on either side with a 1/4" seam. This join on either side left an opportunity to pipe! You know how I love piping. Make sure your wings on either side are of equal size. This piece will become your complete insert.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There are a couple of ways to alter your pattern for the bodice front. You can figure out the depth of your insert and cut away that same depth on your front bodice pattern piece. (Remember to add back on seam allowances at the bottom of the altered bodice front as well as the top of your insert.) Or if you are a short cut person like myself there is an easier way. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uQPvpAtKzpU/WKfNmE1fDSI/AAAAAAAAIm8/HNif5wuC30YlaUGEpfwLvrGhGrOluDAQACLcB/s1600/louisealter11.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uQPvpAtKzpU/WKfNmE1fDSI/AAAAAAAAIm8/HNif5wuC30YlaUGEpfwLvrGhGrOluDAQACLcB/s640/louisealter11.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Apply piping to the top of your insert. This is just basted for illustration, I would normally glue my piping on. And this insert is wider than the one on my dress, so there are no "wings" applied.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-l-4PT39sY-Q/WKfNmQyjvhI/AAAAAAAAInI/MvZ-sVQRbikjakLbo5x4KEars95bpyH7ACEw/s1600/louisealter12.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-l-4PT39sY-Q/WKfNmQyjvhI/AAAAAAAAInI/MvZ-sVQRbikjakLbo5x4KEars95bpyH7ACEw/s640/louisealter12.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Attach a block of fabric large enough to accommodate the upper bodice of your pattern piece. Again this is loosely basted for illustration purposes. You now have a block to be treated as one piece of fabric.<br />
<br />
If your pattern does not come with a full sized bodice pattern piece, trace one on a folded piece of tissue or tracing material. If you feel brave enough, fold your insert/fabric block in half making sure to center your smocked insert correctly on the fold. I am not that brave.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ei_cJ4lCY28/WKfNmZxod4I/AAAAAAAAInI/Bd42xYgZjLM3mPnAUIindxHSbaMubTs0wCEw/s1600/louisealter13.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ei_cJ4lCY28/WKfNmZxod4I/AAAAAAAAInI/Bd42xYgZjLM3mPnAUIindxHSbaMubTs0wCEw/s640/louisealter13.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Place your full bodice pattern over your fabric block. Again making sure to center your smocking. Pin securely and trace around your pattern piece. In this case where the insert goes the full width of the bodice, stitch a narrow, short zig-zag stitch around your pattern piece just inside where you will be cutting the pleats. This will prevent your pleated piece from unraveling and losing its shape. Since my insert had the flat wings on either side this step was not necessary and I simply cut out my pattern. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-OiNLrNNWXkE/WKeu4O6v3tI/AAAAAAAAImc/ZDT00_2DU0oV-rExhcTnpGEr9y8idKGaACEw/s1600/lollihoplane9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-OiNLrNNWXkE/WKeu4O6v3tI/AAAAAAAAImc/ZDT00_2DU0oV-rExhcTnpGEr9y8idKGaACEw/s640/lollihoplane9.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-33drhLqQ5wk/WKeu8W_RBMI/AAAAAAAAImc/wARlLpFmDDI4fAsEEdv2rNrv5jGyZb7IwCEw/s1600/lollihoplane5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-33drhLqQ5wk/WKeu8W_RBMI/AAAAAAAAImc/wARlLpFmDDI4fAsEEdv2rNrv5jGyZb7IwCEw/s640/lollihoplane5.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kiO9jL1QDxI/WKfUXSFpnYI/AAAAAAAAInU/kDWuDNYnIfAJv2eZnkjx0qJ4VYP1cZdhQCLcB/s1600/louisealter14.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kiO9jL1QDxI/WKfUXSFpnYI/AAAAAAAAInU/kDWuDNYnIfAJv2eZnkjx0qJ4VYP1cZdhQCLcB/s640/louisealter14.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Another variance I made for this pattern was the order of work. In the pattern instructions it had you attach the skirt pieces to the front and the back separately. You ended up with a completed front of the dress and a completed back. Then it instructed to stitch the side seams together. I knew I wanted to pipe all the way around the skirt to the back placket so I completely constructed the bodice without the skirts first. Including inserting the sleeves. It is much easier to put in sleeves without the weight of the skirt involved. I then constructed the skirt, added the tucks and then attached it to the bodice with piping sandwiched between. No side seams involving piping and it is smooth all the way around the waist seam.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I hope this gives you the courage to try adding a smocked insert to a flat bodice. It really is quite easy.</div>

Isn't this delectable? Who doesn't love a pile of <a href="http://www.libertylondon.com/uk/department/fabric/">Liberty of London </a>Tana Lawn just soothing your spirit? No, its not a quilt. That is all I will tell for now.<br />
<br />
Also, I wanted to say thank you as well for all who left comments, texted or emailed about my <a href="http://www.southernmatriarch.com/2017/01/when-wee-care-becomes-personal.html">Wee Care</a> post last week. Our baby is still patiently waiting, just the way we like it. She is now 30weeks 3days. Let's hope she continues to do so for a few more weeks.Marthahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14642210833712724301noreply@blogger.com21tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2898436565218178652.post-41205673888252068842017-02-04T14:12:00.000-06:002017-02-04T17:20:54.357-06:00A Road Trip to Lolli-Hop Lane<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Have you received your latest issue of <a href="http://www.classicsewingmagazine.com/">Classic Sewing Magazine</a>? If you have, you may have spotted two of the sweetest grandgirls on the planet. Page 51 to be exact. The little one was excited to go anywhere with older cousin but that oldest one was excited beyond measure. This was her gateway to the big time. This is the tale of one Mimi's summertime road trip with two little girls. If you know anything about magazines, you know there is quite the lead time. Our trip happened last July when LG was 21 months old and Princess had just turned 6.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qEDwfl3zYvQ/WJYUiOhlqCI/AAAAAAAAIiY/_4Zpgh71HsEzL9GOJdPE_lsv94tRyOlZACEw/s1600/gettingready.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qEDwfl3zYvQ/WJYUiOhlqCI/AAAAAAAAIiY/_4Zpgh71HsEzL9GOJdPE_lsv94tRyOlZACEw/s640/gettingready.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Like I said, that little one will barely let "Errararie" out of her sight. She won't even let her sit in a chair alone. This was the morning we were leaving. Hairs are done, teeth are brushed and breakfast has been eaten. Time to get started.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-P9oN0fEm3MU/WJYUi-pLvAI/AAAAAAAAIiY/qcZRBK7xLz0cAobBktMSkgH3bcf06ryqACEw/s1600/roadtripday1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="624" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-P9oN0fEm3MU/WJYUi-pLvAI/AAAAAAAAIiY/qcZRBK7xLz0cAobBktMSkgH3bcf06ryqACEw/s640/roadtripday1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
It was an exciting day, Mimi had new books, puzzles and for desperate times, DVD's at the ready. Loaded up and everyone was all smiles. We stopped at Princess's favorite place for lunch, "the biscuit place". You may know it as Cracker Barrel. She was in heaven. LG did great on the five hour drive but by the time we were at the hotel she was pretty much done in. This look of squeezing her cheeks is her way of saying "Mimi, I'm done!" Princess even succumbed to a cat nap in the sunny, warm car.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vrnTHk9-Eak/WJYYAe5r1UI/AAAAAAAAIio/pl8nfK0fDcACV0wVtJsvnvjDh8FNWawZgCLcB/s1600/roadtrip2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vrnTHk9-Eak/WJYYAe5r1UI/AAAAAAAAIio/pl8nfK0fDcACV0wVtJsvnvjDh8FNWawZgCLcB/s640/roadtrip2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
"Don't even think I'm going to get back in that car. Don't mind me, I'm just going to stroll up and down this sidewalk wall."<br />
<br />
It was time for some dinner, baths, removing daddy done manicures and reading books. It did not take long before it was slumberland for two tired baby girls.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-AlaLV7K3CdA/WJYUiz3MHPI/AAAAAAAAIiY/YYBqqEFx16g3au9hQf_rz0qeXIPEAjUxwCEw/s1600/shootday.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-AlaLV7K3CdA/WJYUiz3MHPI/AAAAAAAAIiY/YYBqqEFx16g3au9hQf_rz0qeXIPEAjUxwCEw/s640/shootday.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
Next morning we were up early to "get ready", they look pretty nervous here but just prior to this there had been some serious bouncing off the walls. They were excited. Mimi threw all rules to the wind and let LG have her paci. She was deep in the depths of stranger danger at this age and I wanted all comfort measures at hand. Besides, Mommy wasn't there to tell us no. We were off, it was just a short drive from our hotel to the office where the shoot would take place. <a href="http://www.hoffmanmedia.com/">Hoffman Media</a>'s offices are located in a beautiful part of Birmingham.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YRCdlXcVq7A/WJYdMqhqzpI/AAAAAAAAIi4/ThOtsh2fMVcSHk1KdC27Q5WtE4Fd5Hs0ACLcB/s1600/emclassicsewing.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YRCdlXcVq7A/WJYdMqhqzpI/AAAAAAAAIi4/ThOtsh2fMVcSHk1KdC27Q5WtE4Fd5Hs0ACLcB/s640/emclassicsewing.jpg" width="396" /></a></div>
<br />
If you sneak over to the Press Page, tab at the top of the page, you will see that Princess had the opportunity to model for the fall issue. This was great for two reasons, Princess got to "model" alone and it also gave LG time to watch how this process worked. Again trying to ease by that stranger danger.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DPTzmOL4FB4/WJYUinTtAaI/AAAAAAAAIiY/kDsWwsaX_gs0xmAr_mAa56Z0uM3DseyvwCEw/s1600/magshoot1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DPTzmOL4FB4/WJYUinTtAaI/AAAAAAAAIiY/kDsWwsaX_gs0xmAr_mAa56Z0uM3DseyvwCEw/s640/magshoot1.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
Phyllis DePiano and Kathy McMakin were great with the girls. Notice the Kleenex in the floor used as diversions for LG.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-D-JDhLuPbGU/WJYhoNesUaI/AAAAAAAAIjQ/Crlt7EsCYyYWEo6-GCivnCuhww9_al4_wCLcB/s1600/magshoot3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-D-JDhLuPbGU/WJYhoNesUaI/AAAAAAAAIjQ/Crlt7EsCYyYWEo6-GCivnCuhww9_al4_wCLcB/s640/magshoot3.jpg" width="425" /></a></div>
<br />
By the time it was their turn together, the little one was reassured that all was safe and she spied the basket of toys and books. She was ready! Princess was very patient with the rookie.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2K6rI76vXmY/WJYgZcSlzqI/AAAAAAAAIjE/LDA3SIcIpGY6Mk5UAuZsC5MhjCnsjDjfQCLcB/s1600/cheeeeese.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2K6rI76vXmY/WJYgZcSlzqI/AAAAAAAAIjE/LDA3SIcIpGY6Mk5UAuZsC5MhjCnsjDjfQCLcB/s640/cheeeeese.jpg" width="425" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
All the while the photographer Mac Jamieson was snapping away. LG never even noticed him. If she had she would have immediately given him her "cheese" face.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PUP6l0FQTBE/WJYUivlKmaI/AAAAAAAAIiY/0tpy62j57CcPvogZn_F7FuoIOCno210ZQCEw/s1600/magshoot2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PUP6l0FQTBE/WJYUivlKmaI/AAAAAAAAIiY/0tpy62j57CcPvogZn_F7FuoIOCno210ZQCEw/s640/magshoot2.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
Excuse the not so great phone pics. I was trying to stay out of the way.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Believe it or not, we weren't really there for the girls! :) I had just taken along my own models for this issue's submission. "<i>Lolli-Hop Lane</i>". Featuring chocolate bunny lollipops. I had this idea rolling around in my head for a couple of years. I finally got it from the idea stage to the fabric stage.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sfRxEYsgJHg/WJYUiMd9_1I/AAAAAAAAIik/FriocDiybqogr-iIVRM0WqzjbTsYINQZACEw/s1600/lollihoplane5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sfRxEYsgJHg/WJYUiMd9_1I/AAAAAAAAIik/FriocDiybqogr-iIVRM0WqzjbTsYINQZACEw/s640/lollihoplane5.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Dress fabric is a <a href="http://shop.farmhousefabrics.com/stores_app/Browse_Item_Details_side.asp?Shopper_id=40721311723454072&Store_id=198&page_id=23&Item_ID=16188&Name=60-quot;-Sunwashed-Chambray-#1155,-Spearmint">chambray from Farmhouse Fabrics</a>, insert is Imperial broadcloth. Collar is Spechler-Vogel poly/cotton tone on tone stripe called <a href="http://shop.farmhousefabrics.com/stores_app/Browse_Item_Details_side.asp?Shopper_id=40721311723454072&Store_id=198&page_id=23&Item_ID=16355&Name=Skip-Dent,-Poly/Cotton-Batiste-in--White-ONLY">Skip Dent</a>. All piped with Fabric Finders pima cotton <a href="http://shop.farmhousefabrics.com/stores_app/Browse_Item_Details_side.asp?Shopper_id=40721311723454072&Store_id=198&page_id=23&Item_ID=23909&Name=1/16-quot;-Bubblegum-Pima-Gingham,-60-quot;">gingham.</a> (Click the links for resources) Anchor floss is from <a href="http://vaune.com/">Vaune.com</a> <a href="http://www.vaune.com/">Floss </a>colors and smocking graph are included in the magazine.<br />
<br />
Pattern for the big girl's dress is Children's Corner <i><a href="https://www.childrenscornerstore.com/collections/childrens-corner-patterns/products/cclouiserevised">Louise</a></i> with a <i><a href="https://www.childrenscornerstore.com/collections/childrens-corner-patterns/products/ccruthie">Ruthie</a></i> Sleeve and a <a href="https://www.childrenscornerstore.com/collections/childrens-corner-patterns/products/cclee">Lee </a>collar. I love that Ruthie sleeve on an older girl. Gives a little puff without being too young.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PeORLaB_Nyk/WJY0ynlzvdI/AAAAAAAAIkY/euA17bXpNJ8dfFFQl9Qj67nP71X5Pb1HwCLcB/s1600/lollihoplane9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PeORLaB_Nyk/WJY0ynlzvdI/AAAAAAAAIkY/euA17bXpNJ8dfFFQl9Qj67nP71X5Pb1HwCLcB/s640/lollihoplane9.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
I also modified the construction order of Louise to insert piping all around the waist of the dress. Excuse the wrinkles from handling.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_HcmzwV1SZE/WJYUiACKDuI/AAAAAAAAIiY/YOqZOXahv40y2ummq05GFvtD9bGRo-eMgCEw/s1600/lollihoplane6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_HcmzwV1SZE/WJYUiACKDuI/AAAAAAAAIiY/YOqZOXahv40y2ummq05GFvtD9bGRo-eMgCEw/s640/lollihoplane6.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
For little girl's style, I used Children's Corner <i><a href="https://www.childrenscornerstore.com/collections/childrens-corner-patterns/products/ccaprons">Carol</a></i> which is included in the <a href="https://www.childrenscornerstore.com/collections/childrens-corner-patterns/products/ccaprons">Aprons</a> pattern. I modified the smocking just a tad for the single bunny, giving him a bottom border. The bunnies are all finished off with big polka-dot bows. We love big bows around here!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QmKNZPbI_eU/WJYUiS-qfTI/AAAAAAAAIiY/8on-nLTZ6Hw87h4hateBAMZQS41NN-fLwCEw/s1600/lollihoplane7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QmKNZPbI_eU/WJYUiS-qfTI/AAAAAAAAIiY/8on-nLTZ6Hw87h4hateBAMZQS41NN-fLwCEw/s640/lollihoplane7.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
I'm known for many things, one of which is my love of gingham, so the buttons and back placket are also done with gingham. You can never have too much gingham in my mind but I rarely make an entire garment from gingham. Hmmm? Wonder why.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PDPuylwtE4g/WJYUiBFL5jI/AAAAAAAAIiY/s-G-2ERjDbQT61DgJqDcEYTamw7YfafuQCEw/s1600/lollihoplane.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PDPuylwtE4g/WJYUiBFL5jI/AAAAAAAAIiY/s-G-2ERjDbQT61DgJqDcEYTamw7YfafuQCEw/s640/lollihoplane.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
I loved the colors and I love my lollipops and no, there is no mistake in the magazine, they don't have eyes. I didn't like the bunnies with eyes. If yours need eyes, feel free to add them. I hope you send me photos of your version of <i>Lolli-Hop Lane.</i><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-l0lYT-iP0tY/WJYrE25kk4I/AAAAAAAAIj0/KANbn84xmjAyYaFjTyfC9m4cjgYa6rCJwCLcB/s1600/postmagshoot.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-l0lYT-iP0tY/WJYrE25kk4I/AAAAAAAAIj0/KANbn84xmjAyYaFjTyfC9m4cjgYa6rCJwCLcB/s640/postmagshoot.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Modeling is hard work and we were all spent! Thank goodness there is no photo of Mimi, I am not cut out to be a stage mom. I was a ragged mess by the time we were finished. They look a little ragged too. Some paci time, a short nap and we ready to go again.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0ksh05au6js/WJYrGg-EffI/AAAAAAAAIj4/_Xk2Hkb4xJY_rak2w6lIRy_QIyoNAc0hwCEw/s1600/lunchwafriend.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0ksh05au6js/WJYrGg-EffI/AAAAAAAAIj4/_Xk2Hkb4xJY_rak2w6lIRy_QIyoNAc0hwCEw/s640/lunchwafriend.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
Met a friend for lunch to top off our day. We had lunch at <a href="http://ashleymacs.com/">Ashley Mac's</a>. The sour cream biscuits are worth a five hour drive anytime! We even took some to go.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/8HILHz914Cc" width="480"></iframe></div>
<br />
LG did great for so many hours in the car in such a short time. The last half hour of the drive home was her Waterloo, she was done. She had had enough. And this was the song of her people. "Unca" is her brother, and no his name is not Unca. By this time Mimi had let them watch TV and Princess was fully engrossed with Calliou or Snoopy, not sure which one. All in all it was a great time and I look forward to the opportunity to do it again. Anytime spent with my grands is a good time.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<a href="http://www.smocking.org/weecare_program.php">Wee Care</a>, a subject close to my heart. I couldn't even link *A* post about it, there are 68 posts that I have done about Wee Care! This time though, Wee Care has become a personal, heartfelt endeavour. My son and daughter-in-law are expecting their first baby. Stressfully though, that baby girl has kept us on our toes. Mommy has already been in the hospital for preterm labor and is now at home on bed rest. She is 28weeks 5days as of today and we are so proud of the great job she is doing incubating that sweet little one. Doctors have told them though the chances of going to term are pretty close to nil. Their goal right now is to get to 30 weeks. We will celebrate when that goal is reached. I pray that the new goal after will be 32 weeks.<br />
<br />
Fortunately, across the country, <a href="http://www.smocking.org/weecare_program.php">Wee Care</a> gowns are not exclusively used just for bereavement any longer. That is certainly <b>not</b> my goal. We expect this sweet girl to grow into a feisty little one just like her five cousins. Whew. All that being said, even Preemie Princesses need Mimi-mades.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9KyjFV0-Xqo/WIt_4GHkLmI/AAAAAAAAIg0/LVJd_kw5vbcqPmirR59fRa0hekVxnhYwgCEw/s1600/bbweecare7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9KyjFV0-Xqo/WIt_4GHkLmI/AAAAAAAAIg0/LVJd_kw5vbcqPmirR59fRa0hekVxnhYwgCEw/s640/bbweecare7.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Also UFO's come in handy as well. I found this little gown smocked minus the sleeve smocking. No neckband or hem. I have no idea what my initial intention had been for this sweet gown but I am glad I found it. Don't you just love a sweet puffed sleeve?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iTo9_kcKugA/WIt_3y4ivxI/AAAAAAAAIgs/by72yUT7V6sPEkTrfiqjnBQT3wixFptpgCEw/s1600/bbweecare6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iTo9_kcKugA/WIt_3y4ivxI/AAAAAAAAIgs/by72yUT7V6sPEkTrfiqjnBQT3wixFptpgCEw/s640/bbweecare6.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The other sleeve shows the smocking. It also shows the sweet, cozy, texture of the Swiss flannel. Love Swiss flannel. This gown was made with scraps I am sure.<br />
<br />

A word to the wise or from those that learned the hard way; when you start a project, take a <a href="https://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=frixion&tag=googhydr-20&index=office-products&hvadid=47631340179&hvpos=1t1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=13669492257649885298&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=e&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9022811&hvtargid=kwd-1975076741&ref=pd_sl_9ezf2jkoay_e">Frixion</a> pen, write on a scrap of fabric the floss colors/numbers, size and pattern used and stitch it to the garment somewhere. Trust me. I had not done that, the project was not in a bag with the floss included as is usually the case. It was in a basket with other Wee Care gown kits, loose. (I advise using the Frixion pen on fabric and loosely stitched to the project with thread to avoid a myriad of problems. For example, a piece of paper that is not acid free could stain your project. Standard ink on paper could become damp and bleed the ink onto your project. Using pins or staples could leave rust on your project. There are all kind of pitfalls.) Thank goodness for an Ott Lite and thread cards.<br />

<br />
I am so glad that a few years ago, I invested in these thread charts that contain actual thread samples in them. After a bit of trial and error I was able to determine the floss colors I had used to stitch the sleeves and a couple of bullions.<br />
<br />
FYI: I don't believe either of these thread charts are available with the actual thread in them any longer. They do become available on eBay and Etsy on occasion. They are worth the search and the $ if you find them. The newer ones are printed color charts with pictures of the thread. Not as accurate.<br />
<br />

<br />
As I said before, the gown is made from Swiss Flannel and is a gown made without side seams. It was featured in Issue #48 of Australian Smocking and Embroidery. So sweet.<br />
<br />

Instead of a turned up hem I finished the hem with a narrow lace.<br />

<br />
The back is closed with ribbon and antique buttons. This sweet gown is intended for a baby that weighs 3-4 pounds. The pattern includes sizes from Teeny Preemie around 1# all the way to newborn of 5-6 #. I didn't want any snaps, buttons are velcro down the back because preemie babies have very tender skin.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hhiJ2WOZ54c/WIt_kNvk-WI/AAAAAAAAIhE/8BwX0jI22EEnY8_IQjpqNKwF_LxJzhg3wCEw/s1600/bb2weecare2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hhiJ2WOZ54c/WIt_kNvk-WI/AAAAAAAAIhE/8BwX0jI22EEnY8_IQjpqNKwF_LxJzhg3wCEw/s640/bb2weecare2.jpg" width="620" /></a></div>
<br />
We all know I love a christening gown and have a full on one in the works for this baby girl. Mommy and Daddy want her to be baptized immediately after birth. There is no way a 2-3# baby could wear a 39", size 3-6 months gown, so I made a Wee Care gown that can be used for the interim. I stitched this while Mommy was in the hospital trying to stop labor so I wanted it to be quick but still pretty.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dRhqrztfddM/WIt_3BQtbZI/AAAAAAAAIgg/E7Er_w2pRUMoFMcC2W0vWLbrRvS1rIP-ACEw/s1600/bb2weecare1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dRhqrztfddM/WIt_3BQtbZI/AAAAAAAAIgg/E7Er_w2pRUMoFMcC2W0vWLbrRvS1rIP-ACEw/s640/bb2weecare1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I used Ginger Snaps Baby Daygowns Book IV. Obviously the non-smocked version. It also comes in sizes of 1# to 6#. This is the 2-3# size.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1og4TR6boZU/WIt_kW7IoNI/AAAAAAAAIhE/8-6_e70Dn5wDCa8AY5rKQyCuhsiwoDtCgCEw/s1600/bb2weecare4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1og4TR6boZU/WIt_kW7IoNI/AAAAAAAAIhE/8-6_e70Dn5wDCa8AY5rKQyCuhsiwoDtCgCEw/s640/bb2weecare4.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Since I didn't have time for hand embroidery not knowing how long I had to finish the gown, I opted for some simple machine embroidery. I used a couple of designs from <a href="http://www.customkeepsakes.com/shop/Design-Collections/p/Christening-2-Collection-x12444477.htm">The Christening 2 Collection by Custom Keepsakes. </a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-78FQ_mptHqM/WIt_k1K20FI/AAAAAAAAIhE/QFEd1NDF0hwQRyb7DZC8p7MrT18ErRiAQCEw/s1600/bb2weecare7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-78FQ_mptHqM/WIt_k1K20FI/AAAAAAAAIhE/QFEd1NDF0hwQRyb7DZC8p7MrT18ErRiAQCEw/s640/bb2weecare7.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The fabric is satin batiste and I used DMC 50wt embroidery thread for the embroidery. Not a project for shiny polyester embroidery threads. I used a machine pin stitch to attach the lace down the front. Again, from a leftover fabric from another project. That stash closet does come in handy.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9VPxEw8ccp0/WIt_kHnf-hI/AAAAAAAAIhE/vLSoHNcIPbkaW8R98c50-6ABAU-XKvlegCEw/s1600/bb2weecare3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9VPxEw8ccp0/WIt_kHnf-hI/AAAAAAAAIhE/vLSoHNcIPbkaW8R98c50-6ABAU-XKvlegCEw/s640/bb2weecare3.jpg" width="542" /></a></div>
<br />
Excuse the back, it had been handled quite a bit trying to photograph it, so it was getting wrinkled.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kO6rCtM1Swc/WIt_3TcBVOI/AAAAAAAAIgk/KzzBl9YVhjQ5sHlLbOc2D4GVgOYzcq7LQCEw/s1600/bb2weecare5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kO6rCtM1Swc/WIt_3TcBVOI/AAAAAAAAIgk/KzzBl9YVhjQ5sHlLbOc2D4GVgOYzcq7LQCEw/s640/bb2weecare5.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I used the same closure as the pink gown. Just a couple of antique buttons to hold down the ends of the ribbon ties. This is before I tied the ribbon in a bow so you could see the tiny buttons. That neckband is only a tad over 1/8" wide, so those buttons are tiny. The buttons at the neck aren't as likely to mark or scratch their tender skin as a button closure down the back of the gown. Again, I didn't want snaps or velcro either.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gHaWY5uCNX0/WIt_kpmd5cI/AAAAAAAAIhE/IgE10Yw2fRsehaEuiqqoJVzuz9FuqzEAQCEw/s1600/bb2weecare6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gHaWY5uCNX0/WIt_kpmd5cI/AAAAAAAAIhE/IgE10Yw2fRsehaEuiqqoJVzuz9FuqzEAQCEw/s640/bb2weecare6.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Another sweet sleeve with narrow lace at the edge. Even if baby can't be completely dressed in the gown we can lay it over her in the isolette and she will have a Mimi made gown for a special moment. We will use the full size gown later on to have an at home celebration and portraits when she arrives home.<br />
<br />
As we continue to pray for this precious girl, I have another Wee Care gown in the works. In a slightly bigger size. Wouldn't it be wonderful if she grew straight through these sizes before she is born. <br />
<br />
In a day or two I have photos of another sweet girl at her baptism. We have babies all around this time.Marthahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14642210833712724301noreply@blogger.com21tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2898436565218178652.post-40756946706680817832016-12-31T08:00:00.000-06:002016-12-31T08:00:04.952-06:00Time to Look Back<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Time to look back at the previous year. What a year it has been! Here is the run down.<br />
<ul>
<li>Nineteen Machine Embroidered T-Shirts (yes 19!)</li>
<li>Seven Dresses</li>
<li>Five Machine Embroidered Hooded Towels</li>
<li>Five Sew-Together Bags</li>
<li>Five Shorts</li>

<li>Three Smocked Dresses</li>
<li>Three Skorts</li>
<li>Two Knit Nightgowns</li>
<li>Two CC Taylor Bubbles</li>

<li>One Doll Dress</li>
<li>One Machine Embroidered Baby Dress</li>

<li>One Ironing Board Cover</li>
</ul>
For a total of <b><span style="font-size: large;">69</span></b> items consisting of <span style="font-size: large;"><b>71</b> </span>pieces! No wonder I'm tired. That is on average, one piece every four days. And we know I don't work at a leisurely ahead of schedule pace. There were some break neck days in there. These pieces involved<br />
<ul>
<li>Twenty purchased embroidery blanks</li>
<li>Fifteen Children's Corner Patterns used for a total of Thirty Six times</li>
<li>One Old Fashioned Baby Pattern</li>

Add to this:<br />

<li>Two Magazine Articles (the reason one photo in the lot is blurred, look for it to come out next month)</li>
<li>One Tutorial</li>
<li>One Road Trip with two little girls for a photo shoot. (I am NOT a good stage mom. Think an exhausted, sweating, done in Mimi, but those girls looked great and had a ball!)</li>
<li>One Week of "Camp Mimi" for Four this year</li>
<li><b>74 Days </b>away from home, no trips abroad this year.</li>
<li>One Birthday Party</li>
<li>One Dance Recital</li>
<li>One Kindergarten Graduation</li>
<li>One First Day of School</li>
<li>Getting all fourteen of us together for a Family Portrait. This deserves BIG kudos. If you have grown children, ALL who do not live in the same town, you get it.</li>
<li>Three Holidays away from home.</li>
<li>Twelve Airline Flights</li>
<li>Thousands of miles on my car and my rear end.</li>
</ul>
<div>
And once again alllllll of this was trumped by some big news:</div>
</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>Our son and his wife announcing the coming of their first child due at Easter.</li>
<li>And the <b>arrival</b> of our fifth grandchild.</li>
</ul>

<div>
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
As I mentioned previously, she is the most chill baby. She is #3 for our youngest daughter that lives in New Orleans. Her big brother and big sister are totally in love as we all are.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
What is in store for the new year? A new baby, first and foremost. A new christening gown for sure. I want to do another CC Bessie for LG. Love that style on her. I am sure LOTS of machine embroidered t-shirts. Good grief! Why would anyone want to sell those for a living? They take me hours. I need to speed up my game. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
All in all, I consider myself very blessed. Stressed at times, but very blessed. I hope you have time to sit down and recant what you have accomplished this year. I am always surprised by the number. I missed not doing it last year. I may have to go back and try to do that. Thank goodness I take photos of everything I make so I can make a tally. This year some of my photos were way less than optimum. And what is even more staggering is that the number doesn't include the things I started and didn't finish! I almost dread taking any classes this year. Have not completed a class project from this year at all. Dang. Time to get cracking.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
What are you working on faithful reader? Until next time...</div>

<br />
Merry Christmas! It is still Christmas in my mind. No tree was decorated at Mimi's, no wreath hung but Christmas was celebrated anyway. Just not at home. I was away from home 27 days from late November until the 28th of December. I did return home for about 10 days in there. And Santa brought the best present of all, Baby Lottie.<br />

She is really LG's baby. She has insisted from the first moment she saw her "My baby!" and we are just allowed to visit.<br />
<br />
I hope your holidays have been merry and bright, I will catch up all of the sewing that happened since October in a few days.<br />

For now just gaze on the chillest, most relaxed baby ever born. Baby Lottie born December 5th weighing 7# 8oz of pure delightfulness.<br />

No faithful reader, I have not forgotten you. There is so much going on in life right, there aren't enough pages here to tell you about it. I am currently speding time with this sweet girl awaiting her baby sister's arrival. Soon, we hope. Holidays? What are those? </div>

<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yuS73i9UGsc/WBEEmzgECrI/AAAAAAAAIc8/WMV5CsT8pH8_EJLkH-m4jt6fYvUxvBcVACLcB/s1600/hank5tshirt.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yuS73i9UGsc/WBEEmzgECrI/AAAAAAAAIc8/WMV5CsT8pH8_EJLkH-m4jt6fYvUxvBcVACLcB/s640/hank5tshirt.jpg" width="532" /></a></div>
<br />
Wildman will be having a birthday soon. Its a fun day and a sad day. Fun, because it is fun to be five. Sad, because he has sadly outgrown most Mimi mades. So t-shirts it is. 😢 That being said, he also loooooooves Superheroes!! His favorite right now is *Spiderman. So Mimi was on the hunt for an embroidery design. (Yes, some licensed designs can be found on the Internet. No, I am not going to point you in that direction. Google, you will find many. ) I never did find an embroidery design but I did find this "pow" number from <a href="http://www.stitchawayapplique.com/">Stitch Away Appliqué</a>. Its called <a href="http://www.stitchawayapplique.com/Comic-Book-Numbers_p_319.html">Comic Book Numbers</a>. Stitched our really nice albeit slowly for some reason.<br />
<br />
I again used a <a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00T82ADX0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1">Joe's USA</a> t-shirt. Yes, I know it is more expensive than the standard "blanks" t-shirts but they hold up so well. These boys get a lot of wear out of the embroidered t-shirts so I don't mind spending a tad more. I am not doing dozens to sell. I am just dressing two little boys.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jwbnduymU3o/WBELwwLHG6I/AAAAAAAAIdQ/HEnNdR0Epo0in8_pj7FHDDZg_It2GEeIACLcB/s1600/spideyman.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="386" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jwbnduymU3o/WBELwwLHG6I/AAAAAAAAIdQ/HEnNdR0Epo0in8_pj7FHDDZg_It2GEeIACLcB/s400/spideyman.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I found this five year old's dream at <a href="http://www.hobbylobby.com/Fabric-Sewing/Quilting-Fabrics/Cotton-Calico-Fabric/Spider-Man-Cotton-Calico-Fabric/p/51863">Hobby Lobby.</a> The fabric snob in me about had a stroke but what a Mimi will do for the cause. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
That begged the question how to cut it so it landed in the right place on the appliqué. It wasn't going to be much good if Spidey ended up behind the 5 or off the edge. I noodled it for a bit when I had an "ah-ha" moment. Now if this is something you already knew, leave me in my ignorance for a bit.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RPy02DoVxEE/WBEEm4WOeOI/AAAAAAAAIdI/9vz-RXbKsB4s0JFHTbOobK3kqaMnKFNFwCEw/s1600/hank5template.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RPy02DoVxEE/WBEEm4WOeOI/AAAAAAAAIdI/9vz-RXbKsB4s0JFHTbOobK3kqaMnKFNFwCEw/s640/hank5template.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
I have gotten into the habit of printing off my embroidery designs to test placement. It has been a big help. I had already done that when I was trying to see through the paper. (Conjures an image doesn't it?) My "ah-ha" was when I thought I can cut out the big parts and use them as a template! Boy, did I feel smart! (Again, keep it to yourself.) I used an exacto knife and just cut away the large areas. Ignore my ratty looking cutting mat, its about 25 years old. Going to need replacing soon.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5BEEa4FpA80/WBEEnGud22I/AAAAAAAAIdI/-FgY34T-v_MUkrTJ2dX8cMGtLg7PiYhlwCEw/s1600/hank5fussycut.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5BEEa4FpA80/WBEEnGud22I/AAAAAAAAIdI/-FgY34T-v_MUkrTJ2dX8cMGtLg7PiYhlwCEw/s640/hank5fussycut.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I jut scooted my template around until I had the correct elements peaking through. It did take careful marking of the cross points on the fabric to get them to correspond to the cross points I had made on my shirt to make sure Spidey was where I wanted him.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-yuS73i9UGsc/WBEEmzgECrI/AAAAAAAAIdI/2FvoxQib0KII9NZlyLKl4WFEs4yw_ZxFgCEw/s1600/hank5tshirt.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-yuS73i9UGsc/WBEEmzgECrI/AAAAAAAAIdI/2FvoxQib0KII9NZlyLKl4WFEs4yw_ZxFgCEw/s640/hank5tshirt.jpg" width="532" /></a></div>
<br />
Voila! A serious looking superhero peeking out of the appliqué right where I want him. Need to wash out that blue mark!<br />
<br />
This was a down and dirty, get it done, Christmas and baby are still in the works. What are you working on?Marthahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14642210833712724301noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2898436565218178652.post-8497461711100433852016-10-22T12:03:00.000-05:002016-10-22T12:03:00.167-05:00And Then there were ten-Sew Together Bags<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CcNz21R64Ys/WAuUqBjN2WI/AAAAAAAAIcQ/NWB6F2o9hhEQakx9m3x3frMFEAQHI4LxACEw/s1600/sewtogether.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CcNz21R64Ys/WAuUqBjN2WI/AAAAAAAAIcQ/NWB6F2o9hhEQakx9m3x3frMFEAQHI4LxACEw/s640/sewtogether.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
As the title suggests, and then there were ten. I posted about my <a href="https://www.craftsy.com/sewing/patterns/sew-together-bag/136309">Sew Together Bag</a> obsession <a href="http://www.southernmatriarch.com/2016/04/first-there-was-one.html">here</a>. Like most obsessions, it doesn't go away on its own. So here is No. 10! I made it to swap with a friend who is making something darling for Princess. More on that at a later date, think Noel and fir trees.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WB3qL-rfTT0/WAuXnYgs6MI/AAAAAAAAIco/SzX52zi4sogmIIkidzXXWzhsWRGzkfUSACLcB/s1600/1864.23641.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WB3qL-rfTT0/WAuXnYgs6MI/AAAAAAAAIco/SzX52zi4sogmIIkidzXXWzhsWRGzkfUSACLcB/s1600/1864.23641.jpg" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Lullaby by Kate and Birdie Paper Co for Moda<br /><br /><div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
The fabric set I used was <a href="http://www.modafabrics.com/fcc_lullaby.pdf">Lullaby by Kate & Birdie Paper Co</a> for Moda Fabrics. I love those sweet little birds and my friend likes peach.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-EB-Y4xgtYrs/WAuUqNdhyII/AAAAAAAAIcg/4N-nyGaMLJApBzlx6LHUrbVNcko7mUJzwCEw/s1600/sewtogether2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-EB-Y4xgtYrs/WAuUqNdhyII/AAAAAAAAIcg/4N-nyGaMLJApBzlx6LHUrbVNcko7mUJzwCEw/s640/sewtogether2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I always love the look of the side of the bag when its closed. I know I am strange. Go with it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0C4zzxo1274/WAuUqFg-G4I/AAAAAAAAIcg/Mh58jP1L3VgV4EwtSY3_5jSwLKna6vQLwCEw/s1600/sewtogether3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0C4zzxo1274/WAuUqFg-G4I/AAAAAAAAIcg/Mh58jP1L3VgV4EwtSY3_5jSwLKna6vQLwCEw/s640/sewtogether3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It is always fun to see the insides. And yes, I did intend for the zippers to open in opposite directions. I love the cool crisp look to this color combination.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Pt2fAQyU2x0/WAuUqcEiElI/AAAAAAAAIcg/NM-jLcUeAL0Xl6k-LNEJtW2QQfCRO2yvwCEw/s1600/sewtogetherbag.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Pt2fAQyU2x0/WAuUqcEiElI/AAAAAAAAIcg/NM-jLcUeAL0Xl6k-LNEJtW2QQfCRO2yvwCEw/s640/sewtogetherbag.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
So there you go, the simple story of No. 10. What are you working on, faithful reader?<br />
<br />Marthahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14642210833712724301noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2898436565218178652.post-43567069019011592542016-10-18T08:00:00.000-05:002016-10-18T08:00:25.585-05:00Another Quick Skort for Fall<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AxqjRYP6iv0/WAPE9XKg0kI/AAAAAAAAIbU/7Q1QTfIpdcgE4Z1aKRmlJ38rokSjr8ssACLcB/s1600/arrowframedmonogram.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AxqjRYP6iv0/WAPE9XKg0kI/AAAAAAAAIbU/7Q1QTfIpdcgE4Z1aKRmlJ38rokSjr8ssACLcB/s640/arrowframedmonogram.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I'm on FaceTime one afternoon with Princess, the oldest granddaughter. "Mimi! Look at this skirt, it has bunnies on it!" I reply, "Yes, it does." Her emphatic response, "Its October!" Okay, I might be dimwitted but on occasion even I can hear what is not being said. In other words, I need another one that isn't Easter themed. Can I help that she wears <a href="http://www.southernmatriarch.com/2016/03/easter-egg-hunters-part-2.html">this skort</a> three times a week? Mom says she loves it. For her it is the best of both worlds, dress-like and shorts underneath. So I am making more.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mY5ogg8xMFw/WAPIJVZ6MlI/AAAAAAAAIbs/g4d8B4GBrSogN1GIwXAiHCw-sZP4V4jUACEw/s1600/evamarie1008112.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mY5ogg8xMFw/WAPIJVZ6MlI/AAAAAAAAIbs/g4d8B4GBrSogN1GIwXAiHCw-sZP4V4jUACEw/s640/evamarie1008112.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I made the skort from this same orange pin dot twill that I posted about <a href="http://www.southernmatriarch.com/2011/10/boo-quick.html">here.</a> She was so little then, she wasn't even walking.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CvKCKiq10nw/WAPJZHEQQCI/AAAAAAAAIb0/pWShaZDXeMMYE3LlwdVKSZpz-sr6kR7CgCLcB/s1600/cc258_sarasskort_grande.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CvKCKiq10nw/WAPJZHEQQCI/AAAAAAAAIb0/pWShaZDXeMMYE3LlwdVKSZpz-sr6kR7CgCLcB/s640/cc258_sarasskort_grande.jpg" width="548" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Children's Corner Sara's Skort</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I used<a href="https://www.childrenscornerstore.com/collections/patterns/products/ccsarasskort"> Children's Corner Sara's Skort</a> again. I am a slow sew-er and even I cut out, sewed and finished the skort and embroidered the t-shirt in an afternoon and evening. So quick.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HHlDcHDj1rk/WAPE9wZi_bI/AAAAAAAAIbo/ACL8erw-StoGoYw-FSr2BnoKPDLhKp4CwCEw/s1600/childrenscornersaraskort.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HHlDcHDj1rk/WAPE9wZi_bI/AAAAAAAAIbo/ACL8erw-StoGoYw-FSr2BnoKPDLhKp4CwCEw/s640/childrenscornersaraskort.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
She is certainly not that baby anymore. Too grown up for this Mimi to like. The flat front gives it an even more grown up look. I don't expect it to fit longer than a hot minute. I made the size 6 again. She is an average size 6 year old but has not grown a whole lot in the last year. I expect her to shoot up at any second. She has already grown a shoe size in the last 8 weeks. So a growth spurt is imminent. Still I stuck with the size 6 since it still hits right above her knee. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The t-shirt blank is from <a href="http://www.arbblanks.com/girls/category%20girls%20shirts/girls-puff-short-sleeve-t-shirt">ARB Blanks</a> and it is a size 8. Still fits great. I have been very happy with their blanks. It has held up great in the wash, and being worn 2-3x a week it has been washed A LOT! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The embroidery is from <a href="http://www.stitchawayapplique.com/Tribal-Arrows-Monogram-Frame_p_601.html">Stitch Away Appliqué</a>. Stitched up beautifully. First time using one their designs. I have no idea what font I used for the monogram.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6ShPWie1Nhk/WAPE9YlfQnI/AAAAAAAAIbo/gK5_ZhM8ees-KERALQaQkJmzjGSlN8CrgCEw/s1600/childrenscornersaraskort2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6ShPWie1Nhk/WAPE9YlfQnI/AAAAAAAAIbo/gK5_ZhM8ees-KERALQaQkJmzjGSlN8CrgCEw/s640/childrenscornersaraskort2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
While the twill was from the stash closet, I wanted something new for the pleated ruffle and shorts. I went to a local quilt shop, <a href="http://www.janielouquilts.com/">Janie Lou</a> and found this cute floral. I wanted something besides gingham. Shock, I know. It is called "Whatever the Weather" by Kaufman</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FhOuRxCnu3Q/WAPE9xR15XI/AAAAAAAAIbo/0Z6XbonZaXgjiplsK14zYpzVAKEmIaJzwCEw/s1600/childrenscornersaraskort3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FhOuRxCnu3Q/WAPE9xR15XI/AAAAAAAAIbo/0Z6XbonZaXgjiplsK14zYpzVAKEmIaJzwCEw/s640/childrenscornersaraskort3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I didn't realize until I had it home that the base of the print also had polka dots. I am nothing if not predictable. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have more of these planned for her as well as a <a href="https://www.childrenscornerstore.com/collections/patterns/products/cclucy">Children's Corner Lucy</a> from this same twill planned for LG. My fabric for Christmas dresses should arrive soon, and I still am working on linen for that coming home gown for our December baby. Have to go, there is sewing to do!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Keep stitching, faithful reader.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

At <a href="http://www.southernmatriarch.com/2016/03/easter-parade.html">Easter time</a> I promised a tutorial on using bias fabric as a trim, and then quickly forgot. My brain is a sieve. More pours out the bottom than I could ever pour in. While I was making <a href="http://www.southernmatriarch.com/2016/10/a-new-babe-on-way.html">this sweet dress</a> for one of our new babies on the way, I remembered making that promise. Thankfully, the memory floated to the top of the tar pit in time for me to snap some photos while I constructed that dress. So here goes.<br />
<br />
In generations past, a sailor collar such as the one pictured above would have been trimmed with <a href="http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/soutache">soutache braid.</a> More recently things like flat ribbon and rick rack have been used. When I made Nugget's Easter outfit, I knew it would be difficult to color match the aqua pique so I used self fabric as a substitute for the soutache or ribbon trim.<br />
<br />
It is an inexpensive but effective way to add a pop of color or just to mimic a traditional trim such as on my sailor collar.<br />
<br />
What you need:<br />
<ul>
<li>Fabric of your choice, natural fibers work best but poly/cotton can be wrestled into submission</li>
<li>Rotary cutter/mat preferred but not crucial</li>
<li>Starch</li>
<li>Glue</li>
<li>Bias trim maker</li>
<li>Wash Away Marking Pen</li>
<li>Hot Iron</li>
<li>Edge stitch foot for your machine</li>
<li>Patience, but not a lot.</li>
</ul>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fWsbA2G6mFI/WAGutPYW9FI/AAAAAAAAIZc/QB9Rez47J_Qk8mGeaCJLmQieOvbHQeHPwCEw/s1600/biastrimtutorial.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fWsbA2G6mFI/WAGutPYW9FI/AAAAAAAAIZc/QB9Rez47J_Qk8mGeaCJLmQieOvbHQeHPwCEw/s640/biastrimtutorial.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This is a set of bias tape makers that I have. All are by Clover. Available in most sewing, craft stores. I realize that there is also a "machine" by Simplicity that is available but those little metal wedge things fit in the drawer and cost very little. If I were having to make hundreds of yards of bias I might would consider another gadget but I'm not. Couple of yards at a time is the most I would probably need. I would strongly advise against using prepackaged bias found in big box sewing/craft stores unless you are realllllllly forced to do so. The fabric that bias is made from is not always color fast (ask me how I know), may not be cut on a true bias and the fabric is not the best. I know I am a fabric snob, it is one of my many faults.</div>
<br />
For glue, there are so many available on the market now. Everything from <a href="http://colonialneedle.com/Roxanne-Glue-Baste-It.html">Roxanne's Glue Baste-It</a>, <a href="http://www.jillilystudio.com/shop/AppliGlue/p/AppliGlue.htm">Jillily's Appli-Glue</a>, <a href="http://www.sewline.com.au/product/glue-pen/#">Sew-Line Glue Pen</a> to plain ol' Elmer's Glue. All work. These are just a few of the options available. Just make sure what ever you choose is water soluble.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-sGZ7apoNp1A/WAG32JcXLzI/AAAAAAAAIZs/bmZFy-GsBpME5iy4L_92ZyPJGo5IIVDWACLcB/s1600/71LM44nAcmL._SX522_.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-sGZ7apoNp1A/WAG32JcXLzI/AAAAAAAAIZs/bmZFy-GsBpME5iy4L_92ZyPJGo5IIVDWACLcB/s400/71LM44nAcmL._SX522_.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Starch! Starch! Starch! How do people sew without starch? I no longer am able to find the <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Niagara-Non-Aerosol-Spray-Starch-Lavender/dp/B002V4LVWE/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?rps=1&ie=UTF8&qid=1476507529&sr=8-1&keywords=non+aerosol+starch&refinements=p_85%3A2470955011">Niagra Non-Aerosol</a> locally so I order it by the case from Amazon. I prefer it over the spray can.<br />
<br />
Fabric, again the options are endless. For the baby dress, in order to have the trim match the piping, I deconstructed some of the left over piping and used the fabric from that.<br />
<br />
First cut your bias strips, I am remedial and have already admitted that I can remember nothing, I have written on my individual makers with a sharpie what width bias I need for each size bias tape. You will see it in some of the following photos. I cut my bias with a rotary cutter but if you want to draw lines and cut with scissors, go for it. Make sure when you cut the bias strips, that you are cutting on the true 45* angle. That is crucial if you are going to shape/curve your bias trim.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KgmLkjsQFF8/WAGutBrYfwI/AAAAAAAAIZc/MxcToJgDhJ0m0oLBDKLTe6ahUcTQeaBsQCEw/s1600/biastrimtutorial1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KgmLkjsQFF8/WAGutBrYfwI/AAAAAAAAIZc/MxcToJgDhJ0m0oLBDKLTe6ahUcTQeaBsQCEw/s640/biastrimtutorial1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
You can see my sharpie notes on my bias maker. You feed the bias strip into the wide end of the bias maker, you might need to scooch it through with a straight pin to get it to come out the narrow end where it has magically folded it into folded bias strip.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uiPiSqiPMDQ/WAGutlU3b8I/AAAAAAAAIZc/u7x8qAQTm4QAzqaRGoX9Pm0lD9hChIhegCEw/s1600/biastrimtutorial3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uiPiSqiPMDQ/WAGutlU3b8I/AAAAAAAAIZc/u7x8qAQTm4QAzqaRGoX9Pm0lD9hChIhegCEw/s640/biastrimtutorial3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
As you gently pull the fabric through the tape maker, spray with starch until damp. Iron dry.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-g8bFQ7oPGmQ/WAGutsU5nBI/AAAAAAAAIZc/G-vla1obMuc8UFS-Tqm3CA3STD6qB-rewCEw/s1600/biastrimtutorial4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-g8bFQ7oPGmQ/WAGutsU5nBI/AAAAAAAAIZc/G-vla1obMuc8UFS-Tqm3CA3STD6qB-rewCEw/s640/biastrimtutorial4.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Use your iron to press the starch dry immediately as it comes out of the tape maker. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-EGyr6gj6StM/WAGut0w5-OI/AAAAAAAAIZc/KdwAlsElYtcZdreoPiPeAh2I5G1oRHpJACEw/s1600/biastrimtutorial5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-EGyr6gj6StM/WAGut0w5-OI/AAAAAAAAIZc/KdwAlsElYtcZdreoPiPeAh2I5G1oRHpJACEw/s640/biastrimtutorial5.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
If you try to pull a long length out before you starch and press, it will pop open on you. Even more so when you are using a poly/cotton fabric. This will result in a folded bias that is not consistent in width. So every couple inches, wet with the starch and dry with the iron.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-z420kZSWpYs/WAGuuADW4rI/AAAAAAAAIZc/xHJ40wJSEp4w8251QlHiBDx4yjuQsnW3ACEw/s1600/biastrimtutorial6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-z420kZSWpYs/WAGuuADW4rI/AAAAAAAAIZc/xHJ40wJSEp4w8251QlHiBDx4yjuQsnW3ACEw/s640/biastrimtutorial6.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
This will result in a sharp, consistent bias tape. (And don't be judging my dirty ironing board cover. I know you were.)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QcQRFBGCkAw/WAGuuAS_6xI/AAAAAAAAIZc/dcJUMYkFYS4jUpWv7KAL7v152QsivDvnwCEw/s1600/biastrimtutorial7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="532" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QcQRFBGCkAw/WAGuuAS_6xI/AAAAAAAAIZc/dcJUMYkFYS4jUpWv7KAL7v152QsivDvnwCEw/s640/biastrimtutorial7.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Decide the placement on your garment.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uzzw8WllVFk/WAGuuJGawGI/AAAAAAAAIZc/rM3mcsgrBLwbdpafViMPyAg9IbW29nR8gCEw/s1600/biastrimtutorial8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uzzw8WllVFk/WAGuuJGawGI/AAAAAAAAIZc/rM3mcsgrBLwbdpafViMPyAg9IbW29nR8gCEw/s640/biastrimtutorial8.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Measure and mark your placement. I did this after I hemmed it. I feel like my placement with the marking pen and glue is more accurate having the hem to measure from rather than trying to hem it after I have added the trim. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VC7EgW3VyJk/WAG-PgKzmdI/AAAAAAAAIZ8/PalS-BMtkfkykXSYt6rPmPcyQvVOhyJsQCLcB/s1600/61tTndrQoFL._SL1200_.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VC7EgW3VyJk/WAG-PgKzmdI/AAAAAAAAIZ8/PalS-BMtkfkykXSYt6rPmPcyQvVOhyJsQCLcB/s400/61tTndrQoFL._SL1200_.jpg" width="87" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I know there will be many who will express concern over ironing over the blue marks. I use this fine blue wash out marker from Clover. I buy them two and three at a time. I PERSONALLY have not had a problem with the blue marks coming out after I have ironed over them. And I iron over the blue marks with every garment I make or embroider. <b>It is important to thoroughly rinse out the blue marks with plain running water before you use any soap on your finished project.</b> And as always, if you are concerned, try a test on some scrap fabric first. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9YcfcmRwO74/WAHET9ZULtI/AAAAAAAAIaQ/S4qJJqBi3hQmOhIVVUOF2GVoGR_ZXjOGwCEw/s1600/biastrimtutorial12.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9YcfcmRwO74/WAHET9ZULtI/AAAAAAAAIaQ/S4qJJqBi3hQmOhIVVUOF2GVoGR_ZXjOGwCEw/s640/biastrimtutorial12.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I neglected to take a photo of the glueing step during construction so I had to recreate it. I glue down one side of the bias at a time. Use small dots of glue and making sure that you glue the bias down accurately, barely above your marked line. Avoid stretching your bias as you apply. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tTyxuZqmfeM/WAHET7lUFaI/AAAAAAAAIaU/J8_uyjmtWwslCN1I7wlvh30-f44hTWb5ACEw/s1600/biastrimtutorial13.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tTyxuZqmfeM/WAHET7lUFaI/AAAAAAAAIaU/J8_uyjmtWwslCN1I7wlvh30-f44hTWb5ACEw/s640/biastrimtutorial13.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
Iron dry. This prevents you from accidentally moving the trim as you move your fabric.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ttTHc3DD8E8/WAHET0oSA2I/AAAAAAAAIaY/GJCNClGZz0I8YFMuQMrxycU2A0Vs1HrDwCEw/s1600/biastrimtutorial14.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ttTHc3DD8E8/WAHET0oSA2I/AAAAAAAAIaY/GJCNClGZz0I8YFMuQMrxycU2A0Vs1HrDwCEw/s640/biastrimtutorial14.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
This shows the second side still being free before I stitch that first side. In my experience it reduces the chance of it rippling.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YcC7SNy0-OY/WAGuuNKj8RI/AAAAAAAAIZc/98DQ6XRXPXw0pWiPNVFVaOXri08oHFb1QCEw/s1600/biastrimtutorial9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YcC7SNy0-OY/WAGuuNKj8RI/AAAAAAAAIZc/98DQ6XRXPXw0pWiPNVFVaOXri08oHFb1QCEw/s640/biastrimtutorial9.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Use an edge stitch foot to stitch the trim to the base fabric. Make sure the blade of the foot is running smoothly along the edge of your trim. Since it is glued down, you can stitch along with very little chance of rippling or movement. If you are using pins, I can guarantee it will not be as smooth a line.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uGaKEis0FH8/WAGutHqu6oI/AAAAAAAAIZc/-_egFqYnNBwizrSlfIJX_oCiQwyOTjcFgCEw/s1600/biastrimtutorial10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uGaKEis0FH8/WAGutHqu6oI/AAAAAAAAIZc/-_egFqYnNBwizrSlfIJX_oCiQwyOTjcFgCEw/s640/biastrimtutorial10.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
On my machine I have clicked my needle position over two steps to the left or right so that I am as close to the edge as possible while still making sure the edge is securely stitched down. Experiment with your machine's needle positions to see what works best for you. This is not the best picture but look closely and you can see where I have lifted the presser foot so you can see the needle in the fabric.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qRwtg8PLtho/WAGutnRng7I/AAAAAAAAIZc/aNw0Cjdhd_4mrfO60Y4GrOdb31FftgvlwCEw/s1600/biastrimtutorial11.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qRwtg8PLtho/WAGutnRng7I/AAAAAAAAIZc/aNw0Cjdhd_4mrfO60Y4GrOdb31FftgvlwCEw/s640/biastrimtutorial11.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Press your trim flat after stitching the first side then glue down the second side, again being careful not to stretch or handle the bias more than necessary. Ironing your glue dry as you go along. I stitch the second side down in the same direction as the first, again to help prevent rippling. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br />
Newest baby girl is due in 57 short days! I am currently working on her coming home gown but other than that, I have not sewn one thing for her. I can't believe it. Part of my problem has been there is no shortage of baby things in the Mimi Closet.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-s_Z9xUxhh7k/WAAQfNqeb6I/AAAAAAAAIX8/Z3cdlBFxIfcFsrLdDNYEXuOa91SFDILdQCLcB/s1600/mimiscloset.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="358" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-s_Z9xUxhh7k/WAAQfNqeb6I/AAAAAAAAIX8/Z3cdlBFxIfcFsrLdDNYEXuOa91SFDILdQCLcB/s640/mimiscloset.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Here is the wardrobe already awaiting LB! As you can see, all of it is awaiting an appointment with an iron. These are things that either I have made, friends have made or are left from my girls and a few purchased things that are smocked. This is just NB-12 months. There are over a dozen daygowns in there alone. She does have one new daygown in there, it is <i>Bella</i> from <a href="http://www.classicsewingmagazine.com/">Classic Sewing Magazine </a>that I shared <a href="http://www.southernmatriarch.com/2016/07/a-little-horn-tootin.html">here.</a> She won't be going nekked for sure. But still every new baby deserves a few things that are just for her.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gtr6qtoKkGs/WAAPN1dAp4I/AAAAAAAAIX0/X_V0CwOOWGoU3FQjXHPxhYxMI7U1KE4WgCEw/s1600/lottiebluebird.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gtr6qtoKkGs/WAAPN1dAp4I/AAAAAAAAIX0/X_V0CwOOWGoU3FQjXHPxhYxMI7U1KE4WgCEw/s640/lottiebluebird.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So Mimi made her just a sweet, simple dress. It is made from a Spechler-Vogel fabric known as Skip Dent. It is poly/cotton with a tone on tone stripe. I piped it with Susie's Ready to Smock piping, also poly/cotton. No, poly/cotton isn't always my first choice, but this baby girl is Momma's #3 in three years. Mimi thought momma just needed an ironing break every now and then. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For a more casual look, I did a piped French binding at the neck instead of entredeux with lace or Swiss trim. The sleeve bands are piped as well. You know me, if its not nailed down, pipe it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

It is no secret that my go to patterns for older babies/children are <a href="https://www.childrenscornerstore.com/">Children's Corner </a>patterns. For new babies my go to is almost always <a href="https://www.childrenscornerstore.com/">The Old Fashioned Baby</a>. This pattern, Best Embroidered Baby Clothes I, appears to be out of print but often comes up on Ebay or Etsy. I made the small size for 7-13#.</div>

The lower skirt is trimmed with bias band that I made from deconstructed piping. (Look for a tutorial in a few days.) The hem is finished with a tiny Swiss trim. Poly/cotton or not, sweet vintage mother of pearl buttons are used down the back. Just for fun, I stitched the button band and hem with the same pink thread I used for the bluebird's kerchief.</div>

Seeing it on her, there are some things I am not crazy about. I want that collar to be wider and the dark purple polka dots are too dark. I don't THINK I used the wrong seam allowance so I will redraft the collar before I make the next one. Also, I made these the length of a pair of leggings that I know fit and are the right length. These are a tad too long. It will depend on time as to whether I re-do it.<br />
<br />
There is so much about this picture I love though. Those damp baby hairs, 😍, she and momma had just come in from a walk. The untied shoe lace. It just melts my heart. They are only little such a short time. And can we talk about how clean momma's floors are?!<br />

I think I can say I have fully recovered from <a href="http://www.smocking.org/">SAGA </a>Convention 2016. I just can't party like I used to, came home sick as a dog. The entire week after returning home I either coughed, blew my nose or slept. New week, new outlook. Time to carry on! Not without taking a quick look at the week of convention. Thanks to the blogger app I was able to post quickly while away even if I couldn't format the posts the way I normally do.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The first night there was a dinner reception that also featured a keynote speaker. The speaker this year was <a href="http://katherinediuguid.blogspot.com/">Katherine Diuguid</a>. She is an assistant professor at North Carolina State University. She presented a slide show about her Master's Thesis "Conseulo-The Glitter of a Dollar Duchess". For her thesis she created a wedding gown inspired by <a href="http://katdiuguid.blogspot.com/2010/05/my-client.html">Consuelo Vanderbilt Balsan's</a> original gown. It was fascinating to hear about, see the slides and the gown itself.</div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
The main reason for convention is education which means classes. Some years I have taken as many classes as possible, a different one each day with a different teacher. That is a whole lot of input! I have learned from that. I do better being able to concentrate on one project for more than six hours. I love two day classes. This time I only took technically two classes. I say technically, because the Scallop Hem dress and Jacket were listed in the brochure as two seperate classes, but in my mind it was a four day class with one teacher. The first day I took "Claira" with <a href="http://www.heirloombeginnings.com/">Phyllis Brown</a>. I love the red and white and you know how I love gingham. Next up, four days with <a href="http://luluandannies.blogspot.com/">Gail Doane</a>. First two days were spent on the Scalloped Hem Pique smocked dress. I actually got quite a bit more smocked than I thought I would. Also finished the yoke overlay and the sleeves. Pretty far in my opinion. The last two days were spent on the Quilted Liberty of London jacket. Yummy working with the lawn as you quilt it. It is way far along. All of the pieces quilted and cut out. These swing jackets go together pretty quickly. Anxious to finish it. I was very pleased with my class choices.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Rp1ms8Pov5I/V_RKvMjvSvI/AAAAAAAAIVY/MUO0S7ZpqqMCAZsN4QJ-WEELmWMp5FmogCLcB/s1600/chapterbasket.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Rp1ms8Pov5I/V_RKvMjvSvI/AAAAAAAAIVY/MUO0S7ZpqqMCAZsN4QJ-WEELmWMp5FmogCLcB/s640/chapterbasket.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Another fun part about convention are the raffle baskets. I have posted about my local chapter's basket in the past. This year we again did the sewing room accessories, all made from the same fabrics. It is always fun to see the different projects come back. I have a great chapter, filled with many talented members. Sadly, I did not win any baskets this year. That is okay. You have to look at buying those raffle tickets as a donation. Otherwise you just get irritated. There were several first time attendees who won baskets. That is always fun to see.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JeOpg2dltmY/V_RHr_jdCeI/AAAAAAAAIVU/nZW3Tv5ha3Q3jMyPZMIqGmwTRzSbY4YKACEw/s1600/tablefavors.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JeOpg2dltmY/V_RHr_jdCeI/AAAAAAAAIVU/nZW3Tv5ha3Q3jMyPZMIqGmwTRzSbY4YKACEw/s640/tablefavors.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
There is usually a meal included each day of convention, it might be the opening reception evening, the annual business meeting, or the Saturday night banquet. A common thread between the meals are table favors and door prizes! It is always fun to see the different ideas from chapters. individuals and businesses across the country. It was even neat to see that a couple of them had machine embroidery of the convention logo. I have never tried to digitize anything so that is impressive to me. Inside the little pincushion jar are chocolates. On each of the chocolates are SAGA logos or again the convention logo. I wonder if I can salvage the the wrappers if I eat the chocolate? Life's big questions.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Vcx3Ai1tOsw/V_RHuElh4DI/AAAAAAAAIVU/hO5UWEsz3iIfW2XdYcZSrYDLxg0DbNLygCEw/s1600/shwnshare.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Vcx3Ai1tOsw/V_RHuElh4DI/AAAAAAAAIVU/hO5UWEsz3iIfW2XdYcZSrYDLxg0DbNLygCEw/s640/shwnshare.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
During convention there is also the Design Show which features original designs as well as Show and Share where individuals bring items they have made during the previous year to share with the attendees. At the last minute I grabbed LG's Easter dress that momma overlooked when she left. I had washed it after our trip to American Girl and left it hanging in the bathroom to dry. Momma hung it on the back of the door when she went to shower. So, oops, it was left behind. I just happened to see it when replacing clean towels in there. Light bulb moment "I should take that with me!" During Design Show and Show and Share attendees can vote for their "Viewer's Choice" and it is announced at the banquet on Saturday night. I was quite surprised when my name was called for Viewer's Choice for Show and Share. I was very pleased as well as surprised, it is one of my favorite garments I have made. Forgive the wrinkles, it was just taken straight out of the suitcase.<br />
<br />
That pretty much sums up my week at convention. By the time I left I was well on my way to being sick so when I arrived home I immediately went to bed and didn't get up unless forced.<br />
<br />
That is all for now faithful reader, there is lots going on in the sewing room besides just the mess created from unpacking.Marthahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14642210833712724301noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2898436565218178652.post-62319057422005987682016-09-24T10:28:00.001-05:002016-10-04T19:21:06.641-05:00I Lost My Mind! <div style="text-align: center;">

Convention has so many high points. Girlfriends, meeting new friends, (hey Janet, hey Vicki), of course classes and learning new things. All that being said, there are two big highlights; market day and banquet. I was walking to market, chatting with my friends. A lot of these gals don't have local sources for supplies or are not comfortable orderinng online. Neither of those situations pertain to me so there REALLY isn't a thing I need. I even said so as we strolled along on the way. "There is nothing I need."</div>

Before I knew it I had bought this delightful set of Dovo scissors from Vaune of <a href="http://vaune.com./">Vaune.com.</a> There is a third pair snuggled under the leather flap. They jumped into my bag and my credit card jumped right out. I was off to the races and there was no stopping me then.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I bought laces, patterns, buttons and interfacing as well. There was nothing I needed.</div>
